I am looking for a few antique pieces, any suggestions on reasonable prices and good condition pieces in the neighborhood or nearby?

my mum declared the places on flatbush btwn park & prospect "too expensive" and "are they kidding?! that piece is BROKEN. it's not worth that ..."

for reference, my mother has spent hundreds, or perhaps thousands of dollars repairing antique furniture from the family. she's pretty discerning, but also willing to spend $$ if she thinks the deal is worth it.

I wasn't thrilled with the selection there. However, I have passed some places in Bed-Sty and was wondering if anyone knew about them? I also heard there are antique shops on 5th ave near Pacific in Park Slope. Any word on those places either?

I'd go for a walk down Atlantic Ave and see what you see. The antique stores of 5th and Flatbush are glorified junk shops, in my opinion. The ones on Flatbush are expensive, because their stuff is in good condition. I don't think NYC is an antiquer's paridise, though.

I'm not sure what you're looking for, but maybe you'd be better off waiting for the spring and a nice drive around the Catskills or Hudson, NY?

I like that White Horse place on Atlantic (not sure of the cross-street), although I haven't actually bought anything there yet. They have like 4 floors packed with stuff. Some of it's crap, but there are some great items mixed in there. And it doesn't seem quite as expensive as some of the other places on the stretch of Atlantic.

I think ebay (do a local search by zipcode) and Craig's List are the best resources... I've gotten lots of mid century stuff, at prices cheaper than any of the stores around here. There's an ebay seller with a warehouse in Dumbo that has lots of great furniture...

The Bed Stuy places are pretty good...The Victorian and Jefferson Antiques, on Tomkins, between Hancock and Jefferson. Also check out Housing Works and Angel 'something' on 17th or 18th St between 6&7th Aves in Manhattan. Atlantic Ave is expensive and you should know what you're buying. Sometimes you're getting the real deal and sometimes they just overprice stuff because they can.
A previous poster mentioned the Catskills. If you have a car or can rent one, it's not a bad idea to take a day to shop upstate (weekend...some of these places are closed during the week). I've found amazing deals in Beacon, Stone Ridge, New Paltz and Hyde Park. Hudson and Rhinebeck are just like Atlantic Ave now. Towns like Margaretteville and Andes are really inexpensive, but you might want to plan an overnight trip as that's at least a 3 hour drive each way.
