if the former Landmark Pub and attached properties on 7th Avenue and 2nd Street will ever be occupied by something OTHER than mannequins.

Landmark Pub was a quirky little place, was it not? I went to school with a girl named Esther Nash, and her mom, Dorothy, owned those properties. In the early to mid-80's, I recall that the storefronts on the side street entrance of the building housed a pet store and a laundromat. The pub used to have strange things going on, like a seance to contact the spirit of Lee Atwater.

I wonder if Dorothy even owns the property anymore. The property looks like it's fit to be condemned, so maybe that explains why it's not being used. Anybody know the deal?

I have heard that it is still owned by Mrs. Nash and that she has two daughters(one supposedly is a fashion designer and I forget what I was told the other does). I've wondered often about the stores there on the side because they look like they still have postcards from businesses displayed outside. The windows of the building - some apartments still have curtains on them. It looks everyone just had to leave ONE day.

I have heard that the Landmark pub (and was it something before that? iron horse?) was a cool place.

I would love to know what happened to the businesses, why the building ultimately just went to ruin, etc.

A few years ago, one of the daughters was in there in the bar with the mom and they were selling things!!! it was really mostly junk. but they were open for a few saturdays and you could go in there. the daughter was almost defensive saying the place was going to open in a month. but that's now about three years ago.

I've heard the mother is very eccentric. someone else said she is very wealthy. but she must be a bit off. while i admire someone who does not 'succumb' to the real estate frenzy in a lot of ways, the building could be what she wants it to be ... something cool again.

someone posted recently that it's being sold for over $5 million but also that the woman will commit to a deal and then back out.

for awhile there, also a few years ago, workmen were in there and my boyfriend and i were looking inside and a man in a car pulled up, stopped, and asked if we were interested in renting. that there were going to be offices (or apartments? can't recall.) in there for $2000 a month or so. he seemed very proud about it. shortly thereafter the door was locked again, all work stopped.

that is funny about the pub having seancces to contact the spirt of lee atwater!!

Yeah I think there was another thread about this recently. The main problem with the place seems to be the owner who apparently and allegedly is a complete nutter. You'd almost have to be to let a building like that just fall into total ruin. The whole thing is just a shame.

the same lady owns the brownstone on 2nd street across from the school that is in the same condition as the Landmark Pub building. Really a shame, why doesn't she, or her daughters, just sell them?

Haven't seen Mrs. Nash around in years.wonder whatever happened to her?

Considering that these buildings are clearly a hazzard in terms of facade disrepair etc...the city should come in and start writing summons etc...

Ms. Nash herself lived in a house down 2nd street between 6th and 7th. It looked like an annex of the Landmark Pub...doll heads strewn out on tables in front of the house, and such. Now, it looks all cleaned up...wonder if she even lives in the slope anymore.

hi. geez, I know more about this than i feel i should! but i used to live down the block from these spots and of course walked by them many times. I didn't know she used to live in that house. She does not live there and I don't think anyone else does. One night, something happened, water leaked from the house next door and the fire dept had to come and someone said the house is used "for storage." I knew at one time what she looked like and I once saw her in a chair outside a house on union street. she must own another property. unless she moved but somehow I would doubt that. (how does she own all these properties? someone on the street who also grew up with the daughters told me when the glass fell out of the building window recently that she is very wealthy.) reporters? this would be a really good story!

From what I heard, she owes a whole load of taxes and is not allowed to operate the pub as a business whilst still owing; if it remains a residence it cannot be confiscated in lieu of what she owes, but if she sells it will go towards the tax arrears. Just what I heard.

I guess the "Baby Doll Boutique" she opened for her daughter didn't make a dent in those back taxes I believe there's still a sign in one of the windows for "Sunshine Realty."

My sister used to write for the Brooklyn Paper Publications back in the early 90's, and they tried doing a story then. Aloof as always, I'm pretty sure Ms. Nash backed out of an interview back then.

On a related note, I sometimes wonder if in my lifetime anything will be done with the boarded-up eyesore on 3rd Street next to Tempo Presto. It seems to me that once or twice there was some activity like it was going to be cleaned up, but then nothing.

RemyBKLYN probably knows more about the place as someone who grew up in the neighborhood, but back in 1992 I went in the Landmark a few times after getting my first apartment on Union Street.

We all had the same wishful ideas like everyone else, "Hey that looks like a cool dive bar!" So we picked out a night and headed over there, and wow. What a psycho dump. Within 15 minutes I had fleas on my legs and had Dorothy forcing me to buy a $6 Grolsch they bought from the MET Food two doors down for maybe $2.

Actually went there one more time for shits and giggles. And honestly, Esther and Rachel are quite hot so why not give the place another try, right? Wrong! We left quickly when we realized that they are truly nuts, and all the fleas and $6 could not bring any of us to think that hitting on either of them would end up with anything short of craziness of the highest degree.

But the most memorable--and final--time I was there was when a friends brother somehow convinced them to let him do a short acoustic set. He starts to play, and then they cut him off to compliment him (???) and then make a pitch to the 5 poeple who were there to buy overpriced beers.

We bought the beers and things were going smoothly, when Rachel suddenly cuts off the sound, grabs a videotape and runs over to the front to show us something important.

The tape plays and it's basically the whole looney trio waiting outside whatever studio Jon Stewart was filming whatever incarnation of his TV show was on at the time. Basically, it's a videotape that's akin to the "King of Comedy" stuff. Where they're basically stalking Jon Stewart. And inbetween Rachel's rambings she says something very clear and coherent.

"I'm going to marry Jon Stewart!"

I'm sure Jon Stewart's people have a file somewhere about "Nash" encounters.

In general, I do think the Landmark was probably a decent place when Dorothy's husband was still alive. I would really like to hear stories about those days. But the craziness of that place made it far from "cool". And I'm really pissed that such decent property has gone to waste. I'm sure that even a gut rehab would not be of any help.

Also, every real estate agent in the neighborhood has a story of the Nash's approaching them to sell, deals coming close to fruition and then pulling a "crazy" act and pulling out. They are just truly crazy.

I've been in Park Slope about 18 years. About 10/15 years ago, maybe less, she used to have music in there. A small stage by the front door, junk-store quality toys filling every empty space vertically and horizontally, a "bar" to the left as you walked in, slightly-chilled cooler-stored beer for real-beer prices, the younger daughter sleeping off to the side, the older one helping serve. I ran a singer/songwriter open mike there briefly, and later played some jazz gigs there. Mother would harass people if they weren't drinking enough beer. I once sang a song with an ironic/unhappy ending, and the mother (very well intentioned) suggested I'd do better if I wrote happy endings. The younger daughter went through a period of being a striking beauty and got lots of attention in ways a young teen shouldn't. When the older daughter got old enough (college age? out of college?), she opened up a real estate office based out of the building. It was called "Safe Haven Realty". I guess she didn't understand that term usually means a refuge from immediate, intense danger. Haven't seen any of them around for years.

I dunno. I haven't seen her tax returns, bank account statements, nor am I privy to her sex history...so I am not really qualified to "post some stuff" in return. Additionally, if someone is elegant, I would imagine you would know as much without the person telling you.

Would it satisfy you to see the building bought by some scumbag developer, packed full of another 42 yups, with a cell phone store and some overpriced tacky boutiques or a jogging clothes shop put in the bottom? Would that let you sleep better at night? Or how about another crap foo foo restaurant, would that make you all happy?

Who cares if it's a 'waste' or a 'shame,' what's the realistic alternative? And don't give me some nonsense about a possible 'affordable yadda yadda yadda anything opening there' because we all know that's not gonna happen.

The building should be gut renovated, but probably due to water damage [the roof had or still has holes in it, and some of the windows haven't had glass in years] and the rodents, pigeons and other flora and fauna [no those aren't the Nash sisters] that reside inside ... it may have to be demolished. Hey -- it took over 40 years for decent buildings to emerge on the site of the 1960 plane crash down 7th Avenue... maybe it'll take a generation or two to see anything in the Landmark spot.
What will become of the site is something that will be much speculated and debated. The building and its land is OUTSIDE the PS historic district, as are all buildings on 7th Avenue south of Union Street.
And yes, I used to go to the Landmark and bang on the toys there.
