I'm moving into Park Slope on July 1 and will need to park my car in the city for 15 days. I'm completely new to NYC, and don't know the rules about parking- my roomie has never had a car so she doesn't really know the deal, either. I know there is something about having to move the car for street cleaning...? Are there any weird parking rules I should know? What is the deal with street cleaning? I'll be living on Lincoln pl between 7th and 8th.

To make it easy, find a garage. And some cash.
You'll be driving forever, especially on Lincoln, trying to find a legal parking space.
And the folks love giving tickets here.
You'll have to look up at the signs specific to your block - if they say no parking between such-and-such time on such & such day with a
little broom logo - there's your alternate side of street parking.
There are garages on Union between 6th and 7th and also between 8th and Grand Army Plaza.

Yea, garage it. Most of 8th Ave around Lincoln is metered parking and therefore the non-metered sidestreets nearby are premium parking spots. The streetcleaning rules are arcane and byzantine... you'll need to move your car at least once per week, which means there are loads of other cars searching for spaces with you. Welcome to Brooklyn!

garage it save yourself the parking ticket money. after getting two tickets would cost you much as parking it for a month lol. _________________ Fight white guilt and injustice by going to a Native American casino and gamble your money away.

park it down in south slope/windsor terrrace; you'll only need to move it a coupleof times, and you can go to clemens for burritos each time. _________________ what would you tell me, if i could hear you speaking?--t.r.
Why are you driving to Brooklyn in the first place? Wouldn't a train or plane suffice?

Parking for a month at the Union St garage costs at least 320$. A parking ticket costs 30 or 45$, unless it's a for being too close to a hydrant in which case it's 115$. Getting towed costs a minimum of 300$.

Just read the signs. One thing to keep in mind (which I learned the hard way with a rental car) is that when the opposite side of the street from where you are parked has street cleaning, you will get double-parked in. If you're lucky, the person who did it will leave his or her phone number on the dash.
(Double-parking is unofficially tolerated for street cleaning hours.)
Another thing to keep in mind in Park Slope is that if you find a spot, there's a good chance it's too good to be true, so look extra hard for the signs.

To answer the questions posed:
I'm not planning on keeping my car in the city, or even driving it at all except to bring my stuff to my apartment, park it, and then drive it out to my fathers in CT on the 15th. I would drive it out immediately following the move, except that my father (and only ride back to the city/train station) is out of the country till the 15h (I picked an awesome weekend to move, eh?) Therefor, I've got two reasonable options:
Park the car on the street for 15 days and hope it doesnt get ticketed or stolen
OR
Park the car in long-term parking at one of the train stations for 8 bucks a day. This is a crappier option as it involves me driving the car out of the city, parking, taking the train back in and then my father getting a ride to the train station and driving the car back to his house. This would be a serious PITA
I would love any advice now that you guys can see the sitch: i'm really kind of at a loss, especially knowing NOTHING about the neighborhood, save where my apartment is located
Okay. I thought you were visiting. I would see if the parking garages will give you a break on the price. If it's not a straight month alot of these guys will charge you day to day. If you can move the car between 11am and 2pm on Mondays and Tuesdays then I'd park it on any of the surrounding blocks of your home since it's only twice a week alternate side. Or! You could drive out to Gerritsen Beach, the boondocks of Brooklyn, or Staten Island, park it where they don't have alternate side and hope it doesn't get broken into.

Perhaps you could drive the car to your father's house and call a taxi to take you to the train station?

I would do that but its 1.5 hours to the nearest train station. It would be a small fortune by cab and no one lives near my father to drive me to waterbury (nearest station)

I think you can manage. It can be difficult to find parking but it is not impossible. It will be less of a hassle than parking it in Connecticut. Also, parking tends to loosen up a bit in the summer because people go away. And if you're around during the day, it's easier because spots open up when people go to work.

windsor terrace, right near fort hamilton parkway stop. there are whole residential streets where you don't need to move the car at all, and it's totally safe over there. and right off the F train. easy as pie. _________________ what would you tell me, if i could hear you speaking?--t.r.

as a fellow transplant from the Waterbury area, welcome to Brooklyn!
as a fellow car driver, I can say that as long as you have spare time to cruise for a parking spot, and are willing to go a little further afield (like the other side of Flatbush) you will do just fine...I wouldn't bother with a garage...

can anyone tell me the names of the decks in the area? I'm trying to google parking so I can call the decks and find out about prices and stuff but I'm not really getting anywhere. Anyone know contact info for these places?
OH and I appreciate the welcome^ I think I'm gonna deck it just so I dont have to worry about it getting messed up or stolen or whatever, especially since I'm not going to be using it daily (meaning I'm gonna have to walk down to check on it and whatnot- i wont be driving except for the 1st and the 15th)

I love on 7th between 14th and 15th. Parking usually isn't too much of an issue and alt. side parking is only one day on each side, so theoretically you can have your car in a spot for a week. You could walk, take the bus or subway back to where youre staying

This garage talk is crazy. I live two blocks away on Sterling, and I've kept my car on the street for three years. Sure, some times you gotta drive around a bit, or take it somewhere on Monday or Tuesday (that's street cleaning on Lincoln btwn 7/8 too), but I've never resorted to a garage.
Just don't park too close to a hydrant. If it looks too close, it IS too close. They'll tow you in a minute.

So I assume that there is no street cleaning on TUES since it's 4th? Thats what it looked like when I tried to muddle through the NY Transit's website- that on state holidays the street cleaning rules are suspended? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
It's looking like Im going to HAVE to park it on the street because lord knows I cannot pay $16 a day to park it in a garage

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm indeed - not surprised you had a hard time figuring out what days alternate side is suspended if you were looking at the NY Transit website - the Department of Transportation is the agency that deals with that stuff. Even though the tickets are written by the Department of Sanitation. And you pay the fine to the Department of Finance.
Anyway, here's the link for the 2006 Alternate Side Parking Rules Suspension Calendar...
And remember - there's always 311 to help you navigate your way through all these agencies.

I have a car and do not pay for parking. Guest at 10:27 is correct sometimes it takes a little while to find parking but you usually do. A lot of my neighbors pay my mother in law about $25 a week for her to move their car each week. Maybe you can find someone like that.
