      6 Decker 6.4.13
Hello there! This is Decker but some people call him Maurice 'cause he speaks of the pompatus of love.

Okay, love is still a little confusing to Decker. He thought he had humans who loved him, but they dumped him into the streets. He was scared and confused when he showed up in our Bed Stuy garden. Now he's looking for a new human to accept him - he wants to know what love is!

Decker is black with a cool white spot on his belly, and a jaunty eartip. He like playing and loves having his face scratched. Decker has some work to do on his manners and he needs a human willing to give him a second chance and help him learn. Decker is super smart, he's learned a lot already.

      3 Decker 6.4.13
Decker after being introduced to a toy mouse!

Decker is shy at first, especially since he's out in the garden. But he will bond strongly if you just show him a little love. Decker is loyal and easygoing, though he's a teen so he still has lots of playful energy.

Decker doesn't like other cats (he wants all of the love for himself!) and he's not great with kids (because of the work he has to do on manners). But he's such a sweetheart and deserves a loving home indoors!

      7 Decker 6.4.13
Won't you please give Decker a loving, forever-home?

Please email bedstuycats at yahoo dot com to meet Decker!

Decker is a male DSH, about 1½ years old, fixed, vaccinated, tested negative for FIV & FeLV. Application, home visit, and modest adoption fee are required.

Edited to add: mods, please sticky?

This is out of the CH neighborhood, so I probably won't have the attention required to follow this address and see what it becomes....

However, if we are to believe the ad, its fate seems clear:

Hi all, first time poster. I recently have to break my lease because of changes in job and have to find a new tenant for my great 1 bedroom apartment on the Bed Stuy/Clinton Hill edge. I am wondering does anybody have any suggestions on where to post a listing besides Craigslist and streeteasy. As I have a full time job it is difficult to constantly make sure I am on top of the search on Craigslist either.

Also, would anyone advice asking a broker to help? I have been showing the apartment several weeknights for the past week, but I can't just always be there and a lot of people rented another apartment already before I can show them mine.

My landlord is willing to have the new tenant to sign a new lease with the current price, so it is not exactly a sublet or a lease takeover.

      Thanks for reading!

      Hi all-

I live over in Prospect Heights and am familiar with the PH Brooklyian forum. This is my first time posting in the Crown Heights/Prospect Lefferts Gardens section.

I have some friends who live in Park Slope who are considering renting an apartment on Lincoln between Franklin and the Shuttle tracks. They are a tad worried as Franklin and Lincoln has kind of a bad reputation as far as Franklin Avenue intersections go.

Is this unfounded? I know, years ago, this may have been true, but do you guys think that it is an unsafe block? They have a one year old, so they also value a not-too-loud location at night. Is it a quiet block? Or are there frequent summertime parties on this block?

Any thoughts as to Lincoln Place just west of Franklin would be much welcome.

      Thanks all, sundinkc

Tomorrow is Brooklyn Day. Or, more appropriately, Brooklyn-Queens Day.

For those of you not in the know, Brooklyn Day was originally a holiday to celebrate the founding of the first Protestant Sunday School in Brooklyn. It dates back all the way to the late 1800s, when all schools would close to allow students to celebrate their Sunday schools.

Growing up as a kid, there were parades in every parish with scouts, drum and bugle corps, dancers, etc. Now, I think most kids just stay home and play while their parents wonder why the teachers are doing professional development in June.

So, how are you celebrating the holiday?

      F_ll in the bl_nk.
      Curated by Shlomit Dror

      Friday, June 21st

      Opening Reception: 6-8 PM
      Curator’s Talk: 7pm

The New York Art Residency and Studios (NARS) Foundation is delighted to announce the opening of F_ll in the bl_nk, a group exhibition curated by Shlmoit Dror, winner of the 2013 annual NARS Emerging Curator Program Open Call.

The exhibition contains artworks whose visual and conceptual gaps evoke opposing elements of presence and absence. Fragmentation, disassembled forms and (in)visibility are core principles that the artists in the show convey through their creative process. Fragments shown in the artworks reference an experience from the past, a historical moment, a geographic location, a voyage or a situation. The absent section in the work, the “negative” space (that is the void which in fact references the presence of something that was there) becomes the main visual experience. The fragments and other elements that used to be part of a whole (which is now absent) have new meanings (detached from their origin) and hence are visibly dominant. The negative and empty spaces challenge the viewers’ expectations. Using our visual memory and archive, we find links to fill in these gaps, which are contingent on our past experiences and pre-conceived notions. The remnants existing in these works are linked to sources that cannot be retrieved, and as a result, these traces reclaim the original contexts (the source), and become the origin themselves.

Revealing only fractions of a structure, image or object, these oeuvres compellingly raise issues of memory, loss, destruction, disassembly, emptiness, temporality and infinity. Consequently, these works also create an interesting tension between the invisible and visible as well as between the corporeal and the cerebral. They invite us to consider which we are more likely to notice, things that are present or absent?

The idea of displacement and traces from the past (origin) comes through in many of the artworks in the show. These traces, which serve as evidence for something that is absent, become present. In other words, finding “presence in absence” means that the absence presents something that is not there, and as a result, that great abyss (the absence) becomes the prominent element, and therefore is still present. The artists in the show Keren Benbenisty, Liene Bosquê, Paul Clay, Ellie Krakow, Ann Oren and Lindsay Packer incorporate text, found objects and popular culture imagery from film and magazines, emphasizing the simultaneous encounters of absence and presence, fraction and whole, as well as reality and illusion. The works in the exhibition are both two and three-dimensional and include video, works on paper, sculpture and installation.

Ok, I realize that many of the readers of this message board may have never been to the Starett City section of ENY.

      Hence, I provide this map:
      source: urbanomnibus

Allow me to describe this area in neutral terms:

-Lots of NYCHA in the neighborhood.

-A large, reaking, sewage treatment plant.

      -A large industrial park.

-Low flying airplane noise from JFK

-If you don't have a car, you take the bus up Pennsylvania Ave to the 3 train.

-It is in the 75th precinct, which is objectively described like this

In that context, I give you the "Meadowwood at Gateway" real estate development, which is adjacent to Starrett City:
      http://www.meadowwoodatgateway.com/?gclid=CJySit7IyrcCFRKZ4AodOUcAlQ

Given the present demand for condos and the fact that these units have outlived the "low income renters" restictions imposed by the Mitchell Lama program, the management company of Meadowwood Gateway has decided that it should quickly sell as many units as it can as condos.

Yes, by NYC's current standards, it is quite affordable: http://www.meadowwoodatgateway.com/home-ownership.html

I even accept that this may be representative of what NYC presently has to offer to a first time homeowner: It is no worse, it is no better.

...One whom -perhaps- has worked for MTA, DOE or HHC for a few decades and saved up a deposit.

However, I shake my head and think to myself, "this is nuts. We are not going to be able to attract and retain hard working, bus drivers, nurses or teachers if places like this are the only places they can buy a home."

However, it would not surprise me if the units all sell in literally weeks.

For better or worse, the change on Nostrand is going to make the change on Franklin look minor.

Hi -- Looking at an apartment on Herkimer Street between Nostrand and New York. I have a 1.5 year old girl. Love BedSty and have been looking for a while -- but not at all familiar with that part of the hood. Just want to check on drug/shooting activity -- have driven by day and night but only over a week. Need to make a decision quick so would really appreciate it. Have friends all over BedSty/Crown Heights but noone really knows this block. Any help much appreciated. I guess the answer I want is to the question -- would you raise your kids on this block -- why or why not -- with what caveats -- if any.
      Many thanks,
      L

They are working on the garage next to the biker bar on St. Marks and Franklin. They have stenciled "Ice House Coming Soon" on the plywood, and have put down some new cinderblock. New bar? I would ask them, only I'm scared of them.

The fish monger at the GAP Saturday market lost their cat a couple of weeks ago after she snuck onto the truck at home and then darted from it in Prospect Park. She's chipped but probably scared and not at all familiar with this area.

It's a sweet female tortoiseshell/tabby named Rosie. She has a multicolored collar and is microchipped. If anyone sees her, please have them call Alex at (516) 383-6304.

The latest info is below from Blue Moon:
OK another Rosie sighting tonight....in someone's backyard on 3rd Street between 8th Avenue and the park. She's walking around the neighborhood, but we have no idea how to catch her. If anyone sees her maybe try to feed her and grab her?

Tomorrow I'll call someone with Trap/Neuter/Release and see if it is possible to trap her. Any suggestions appreciated!

A previous sigting: Rosie sighting!! I got an early morning call that someone saw her on the corner of Carroll and 8th Avenue. She be might between Carroll and Union area. If anyone sees anything let me know!!

The owner, Veronica, is reportedly closing the restaurant because her business can't make enough to pay the increased rent which would be required if she renews her lease.

So, she is going to focus on the catering side of her business.

...the storefront will soon be vacant.

After approx 1.5 years of sitting empty, I noticed that today suddenly a couple of the very nice, but long-empty, retail spaces at the corner of Classon & Lincoln suddenly have their windows papered over or the rental ads removed, as if a tenant or two will finally be bringing some new much-needed (and hopefully useful) retail to this block. Anyone have any idea what businesses might have taken over these spaces??

It seems to be buttressed by a one-off concrete contraption it is braced to with a steel band. It looks like without it, it would fall into the street. It's complete with a Jersey barrier to keep people from crashing into the concrete buttress.

I mean, the thing is obviously there to protect the tree, but why's this tree special enough to get this treatment rather than just getting taken out?
