JEFFERSON COUNTY – A 25-year-old liquor store clerk was sentenced to 18 months of probation and short-term house arrest for selling rum to a minor who died later that night.
Loc Truong of Denver had been charged with providing alcohol to a minor for selling Paul Ondrish rum at the Marina Pointe liquor store in Littleton on July 12, 2006.
Ondrish, who was only 20 years old, bought rum from Truong two different times that evening. Ondrish was using a fake ID.
A few hours later, Ondrish was in a fatal car accident. Both he and his 20-year-old friend, Brandon Nichols, were killed. Three other passengers, all of whom were 20 years old, were also injured.
Truong reached a plea deal with the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office that gives him 18 months of probation that begins with 120 days of in-home detention. He must also obtain a GED, not work in a liquor store, attend a Mothers Against Drunk Driving victim empathy panel and work 120 hours of public service in a trauma unit or similar facility.
The Ondrish and Brandon families had wanted the stiffest penalty for Truong.
Truong was also fined $1,000 and assessed $536 in initial fees.
He will be in court again on September 11.
