My Ipod Stolen in Fort Greene — Brooklynian

My Ipod Stolen in Fort Greene

I am a resident of Prospect Heights and usually post on that forum, but unfortunately I am compelled to report a robbery in Fort Greene today. I was walking on, I believe, South Oxford St. between Lafayette and Dekalb at around 3:45 PM. I might be off by a block one way or the other because I don't know the area that well, and was just taking a walk into a not-so-familiar neighborhood on account of the beautiful weather.

Anyway, I was listening to my Ipod, and had it out in the open, which I confess I often do in the middle of the day, especially in good neighborhoods. All of a sudden, somebody behind me grabbed the Ipod out of my hand. At first I thought it was a joke played on me by someone I knew--then I realized it was a robbery. I saw a young black guy wearing a red shirt running away from me, and I started chasing him. There were many people around, and I yelled "What the fuck??" at him. I did not yell at anyone to stop him, because I wasn't sure if he was armed, and I didn't think it was likely anyone would tackle him anyway. However, just standing there and giving up didn't seem like a great option either.

I continued to chase him (not really having a plan of what to do if I caught up with him). I kept him in my sights, though, and managed to call 911 while half-running. I reported my location and had a cop car come to, I believe, Lafayette and Greene. I kept running, and kept spotting him intermittently. He wasn't exactly sprinting to get away, though he did seem scared of getting caught. Eventually, after a few more minutes of this, he ran into the subway (the Lafayette Avenue C, I think--the one right in front of The Smoke Joint). The cops showed up and we went into the subway to search for the guy, but I couldn't make a positive ID on anyone (my description of a "young black guy" didn't go very far), and I have no idea if the guy just exited from a different part of the subway after running in there. The cops said there was nothing much I could do if I couldn't make an ID, so I just let it go. In conclusion, I didn't find the Ipod, and I'm pissed off. The end.
