Blowing leaves on Dean — Brooklynian

Blowing leaves on Dean

will
edited November -1 in Prospect Heights
Every morning, on Dean Street across from the fire house, there is a sound that is very similar to that of a leaf blower or a motorcycle. Anyone know what it is? I don't mind it most days, but Mondays are my day off and the sound makes me so cranky.

  • I went by there today about 10:30am and there was some new streetwork going on, with heavy machinery. Also, earplugs are a must-have in this city. I know it's obscene to have to wear them in your own place of residence, but welcome to New York...
  • Noise doesn't bother me (I live across the street from a firestation!), and haven't noticed any construction, but this one sound really bugs us. I think it is because we can't figure out the source.
  • Will I know a lot of firefighters and each morning they have to check their equipment to see if it works. If I am not mistaken there is a buzzsaw and the jaws of life that they test and I think that might be what you are hearing. Just ask the firefighters - they will let you know.
  • Thanks. That makes sense.
  • Stacey is right. I often see them testing their cutters as I walk to the subway. They have two, and every morning they fire them up to check them.
