Subject: turkeys are great; pigeons are great.
this human tendency to decide some species are 'better' than others is quite strange. why is a pigeon less valuable than a turkey which we so appreciate getting a chance to SEE in plain sight? i find the pigeons fascinating and fun to watch; they have such personalities. they actually keep themselves quite clean when they can - not always easy in nyc. if you stop a minute to observe their colors and get outside of conditioned responses, you might start to appreciate them. to be so dismissive of another species is ... kind of icky and hard to take seriously.

I once ate a pigeon at a place called Oliveto (fancy Italian) in North Oakland. It was gamey, but it basically tasted like a small rotisserie chicken without the white meat. nybt's right, you probably won't have to look too hard to find a restaurant that serves it. It won't be cheap, though. -
pigeon is easy to find on many restaurant menus, just look for squab.

Cheapest I can find is Yummy Noodles at 48 bowery (btw bayard and canal). Squab with rice casserole for $9.25.

Probably there are fingerprints on the bag, and the cause of death should be checked out too.
Anyone with any 1st hand info, or even just the exact location, please please report this above,
- Fly by Night
the bag sat there for 6 days
any traces of fingerprints (?!?!) would be gone after that rain and the rotting of the birds all over the bag. and it was burlap.
and i am guessing that the cops are far more interested in catching the guy they were shooting at on Carlton than the avicidal manic prowling PH.
the parks department puts rat poision in food at the top of that hill on plaza street.
I could probably argue that the pigeons ate that and were dying all over so they rounded them up to dump them and someone 'fogot'.
but seriously, i think everyone was so grossed out and concerned about the unsanitary (not to mention, odiferous) conditions that it was creating that we were all calling 311 with any spare moments that we had. -

Subject: Pigeons don't transmit disease any more than other birds
Pigeons were actually innoculated with bird flu virus but did not catch it. They don't carry it - or west Nile virus.
In fact, all birds carry about the same diseases - none of which are likely to get a person sick - can if your immune system is compromised.
However, it's far more likely to get sick from another person. Even cats and dogs will transmit disease to people more than pigeons or other birds. These are facts that you here looking for an excuse to hate, kill, and torture (that's what Cancelled Flight is for) do not want to hear.
Read the facts and think how you would feel if someone decided dogs deserve to be stomped on in the street the way people do to pigeons.
Anyone who wants to show people the truth about pigeons and protect them from those who want victims, write to me. We have a group that's been doing this for 2 years. It's called Pigeon People.
As Cat2 said, pigeons are fascinating. They also are friendly to people, and there aren't many wild animals as tame as they are. If you ever rescue one and it becomes a pet, it'll be as affectionate as a puppy or a kitten. They walk into stores if they're injured expecting help. Unfortunately, their vulnerability attracts people who prey on the gentle, weak ones.
Thanks, Cat2 for pointing out something was wrong. For being a conscience. There is no excuse to kill pigeons. The only thing they do wrong is put white stuff on buildings. Who else gets a death sentence for what they leave behind? Guess what: the only effective way to keep pigeons off is the cheapest, safest, kindest way: a physical barrier like wire mesh. Kill them, they return. Don't give your money to exterminators.
Thanks, Fly by Night, for suggesting law enforcement. Pigeons don't easily ingest rat poison, but they are continually poisoned by people (what's painful, slow killing? torture?). The ASPCA should be called by people who care, because they need a lot of prompting to help pigeons. Recently, some people were stomping on a pigeon and the A ignored the call. Asked absolutely no questions. The witness rescued the bird and became a member of Pigeon People.

Actually pigeons have fewer diseases than other birds because they are not migratory and they are also naturally vegetarian (seed eaters, not insect eaters). They are immune to both this current Asian bird flu and to West Nile Virus. -

I think that it is a simple case of familiarity begetting contempt. The animals people have the most hatred/disdain for are the ones that are plentiful and not shy about entering your "personal space". The ones they value more are the ones that are more rare or hard to get near. Just like being attracted to the guy who plays "hard to get" and having contempt for the sweet nerd who actually likes you. Just like gold having more "value" than granite. People want what's rare and difficult to have. Things that are plentiful and easy--dirt, rocks, bugs, squirrels, pigeons, etc.--are seen as having little or no value.
cat.
In fact it's often pretty baseless and misguided. I'm sure pigeons are very nice. I personally enjoy them (except when they poop on me, but that's life). Swans? Nasty, vicious beasts. They're pretty, though, and they don't hang out right on my fire escape, so I still think "Ooh! Look, a swan!" when I see one. Which I definitely never think about a pigeon.
I'm not saying that's right, I'm just saying that it's the way the human mind works most of the time. -
Subject: story about dead birds in a bag.
Hey. I am a reporter for the Brooklyn Papers. My name is Ariella. I really want to find out more about the dead, bagged birds. email me at [email protected] with any recent sightings or info. if you have seen them at all, email me. I have questions for you. -
Subject: good points ... good story.
Hi BlueDove,
You make really good points. Thanks for sharing your perspective and giving it some thought.
Ariella ... it'd be great if you could find out more information on (a) how the dead birds got there (b) why the police just left and did not alert the ASPCA (which would be proper procedure), and (c) what was 311's response? - they should be better informed as well. and also (d) Department of Sanitation should be better informed on procedure of finding 50 dead birds. I did not witness it so I don't have any information in that regard but I did post a questions which I can repost that I was trying to get answers to. Thanks.

Subject: questions about pigeons.
repost from other thread-
regarding the trash bag at 50 Plaza Street which was found to be full of dead pigeons...
when was this first spotted?
did you see the police come and open the bag?
did anyone talk to the police? if so, what did they say?
did the police look to say what the 'cause of death' was?
did the police say what would happen next?
when you called 311 did they send you to department of sanitation or...?
one person said they called 311 4 times... did others call and have different experiences?
any other details appreciated.
thanks.

Mystery solved?
Animal control officers raided a house in Torrance, Calif., in October on reports that birds were being improperly kept there and ultimately found about 300, of which about 120 were dead. Gerard Enright, 61, was arrested when police caught him in the act of performing a tumorectomy on his No. 1 pigeon, Twister, that he had sedated with vodka. Enright is not a surgeon but said he had watched his veterinarian closely enough to know what he was doing. [Court TV-AP, 10-13-05]

yes I have been hearing all about this flu everywhere. First it was started in some south asian countries then an alarm in the U.K though am not sure whether there's been any official confirmation of any such cases yet in the U.K. then recently in the last week or so i read in the newspaper about a couple of confirmed cases in China..that might be a worrisome signal as it may spread to other nations fast as well..wat we can only do is to stock ourselves with tamiflu drug and other bird flu medications to help us fight the flu in case of emergencies..rest is all in god's hands.

Subject: huh?
pigeons don't get avian flu.
not sure what this has to do with the rest of this thread... although i'd read everything front and back and look to alternative sources. who knows what is truth anyway about this flu?
