Subject: Develop Don't Destroy Brooklyn Walkathon against Ratnerville

Bring your friends, family, pets, banners and costumes. Special prizes donated from the merchants in the community will go to the best “Save Brooklyn” themed costumes, and top fundraisers.

Here’s the schedule of activities:

*For those who are interested, the BIG DAY (Sunday, November 13th) will begin at 12:00pm at Freddy’s Tavern, on 6th Avenue and Dean Street (near the footprint). Join us for coffee, tea or hot apple cider, and music by the Save Brooklyn Sym-Phony.

*From 1:00-2:00pm, check in with REGISTRATION at 5th Avenue and Pacific Street, or in Freddy’s Tavern back room.

*We’re WALKING from 2:00-3:30pm. Stay tuned for word about our Special Grand Marshal, who will lead us through the footprint of Ratner’s proposed boondoggle.

*Then it’s the POST-WALK UPDATE PARTY, from 4:00-5:30 at the Soda Bar (on Vanderbilt Avenue, just uphill from St. Marks). Hear from community leaders and DDDb about how we’ll halt Ratner’s heresy history.

WE LOOK FORWARD TO GETTING IN MOTION WITH YOU ON NOVEMBER 13TH!

So start now (if you haven’t already)—REGISTER TODAY!
See you there!
Your Friends at DDDB

[color=blue]We have created a WALKATHON WEBSITE that makes it super-easy for your friends, relatives, neighbors and colleagues to support YOUR WALK with ONLINE DONATIONS that are credited to you.

Yes, in thirty seconds flat, you can set up your own PERSONALIZED DONATION PAGE, that will record the donations made by your friends—and even inform you every time someone gives!

Yes, you can still gather donations the old-fashioned way. But ASKING YOUR FRIENDS TO DONATE ON-LINE is the way we recommend and prefer, because:
*It’s fast…
*It’s fool-proof…
*It eliminates the “middle man” (you).

You’ll be AMAZED AND DELIGHTED at how easy it is to ask people to donate online—and how easy it is for them to respond.

Let us explain…

Step One: Register Online at Our Walkathon Website

It all starts at www.dddb.net/walkathon.

Clicking on that link will put you into our Walkathon Website, where you will create your own INDIVIDUAL DONATIONS PAGE, otherwise known as your “headquarters” (HQ).

When you click on the yellow Walkathon emblem, you’ll be asked to choose HOW you want to sign up:

1. As the leader of a new team (if you want to organize one)

2. As a new member of an existing team (there are more than a dozen fun group to choose from), or

3. As an individual

Click one of these options to go to the next step—giving your personal information—and continue with the registration process.

You’ll be asked to set a fundraising goal (your friends will see this number, so consider thinking big to inspire them) and to give your t-shirt size (your prize for raising more than $250).

You can even make a kick-off donation, if you want to.

When you’ve completed registering, you’ll receive an email confirmation that takes you to YOUR PERSONALIZED DONATIONS PAGE.

Now let’s see how you can customize it…

Step Two: Create a CUSTOMIZED DONATIONS PAGE

Here’s where you start putting your personal stamp on the process:

You’re going to create your INDIVIDUAL DONATIONS PAGE—one that will appeal to the people who support your walk, and encourage them to give generously.

To get you started, we’ve provided some words (header, caption and body text), as well as four pictures that you can choose from.

But let your imagination be your guide—you can change any or all of these elements… preview the page before it “goes live”… or edit it at any time by:

1. Going to www.dddb.net/walkathon
2. Logging in (this puts you in “My HQ”)
3. Clicking the link for “Build/Edit My Webpage”

(You can also edit your profile, login, password or fundraising goal by clicking a link on the HQ screen.)

Step Three: Ask Everyone You Know TO DONATE ONLINE!

Now it’s time to email your friends, relatives, neighbors, colleagues and anyone else you can think of, telling them about the Walkathon.

REMEMBER: IT’S NOT ENOUGH TO REGISTER! YOU HAVE TO TELL PEOPLE YOU’RE WALKING!!

So here’s how you can go about it:

***

METHOD ONE: Use the eMail Tools at Your HQ

To use the tools that we’ve provided, start by going to your HQ and clicking on the link that says “Send Emails to Friends and Family”

Here’s where you’ll create messages to send to friends and family to invite them to sponsor your walk.

Again, we’ve pre-filled the message but you can edit as you see fit.

You can also create and save different message templates to send different notes to family, friends, neighbors or various community groups you’re involved with.

This is a great way to keep all your information in one place. Unless you’ve participated in a Kintera online fundraiser before, you will have to ENTER your email addresses, or IMPORT them (if your email program permits).

***

METHOD TWO: Write from Your Own eMail Program

If manually entering addresses is not your style (or you plan to send to LOTS of people), feel free to write your own letter, and send it from your personal email program.

We’ve also made this easy to do, and posted a sample letter and photos at:

http://www.dddb.net/walkathon/photos.php
http://www.dddb.net/walkathon/letter.pdf

When you ask people to give online donations, don’t forget to give them a link to your PERSONAL DONATIONS PAGE.

To do that, go to your HQ, and find your “Personal Page Link.” (It’s in the left-hand column of that middle box.)
Copy this link… paste it into your personal letter… send it to everyone you know… and watch the donations start to roll in.

How? Read on!

Step Four: Keep Track of ONLINE DONATIONS and Record Money You Raise Offline

Feeling the rewarding fundraising spirit?

Keep track of how much money you’ve raised by regularly checking your HQ. The total is posted on your home page, and you can click “View My Reports” for more detail. (If you sent email via our website, you can also find out who’s read it by clicking on “eMail,” then “eMail History Log.”)

And don’t forget to check our website’s homepage (www.dddb.net/walkathon) which lists our Top 5 fundraisers, and the ranking for all teams.

When you registered, did you ask for an email confirmation every time somebody donates? (If not, you can request that now by clicking “Edit My Profile” at your HQ.) If so, you’ll be notified whenever someone donates online to your page.

You can choose to thank them personally or we will provide a thank you template after the walk.

Finally, if you’re collecting OFFLINE DONATIONS, record them in your Donations Page total by clicking the “Enter Offline Donations” link at your HQ.
Login to your HQ

Step Five: Show Up and Enjoy the Day!

Ready to strut your stuff?

Bring your friends, family, pets, banners and costumes. Special prizes donated from the merchants in the community will go to the best “Save Brooklyn” themed costumes, and top fundraisers.

Here’s the schedule of activities:

*For those who are interested, the BIG DAY (Sunday, November 13th) will begin at 12:00pm at Freddy’s Tavern, on 6th Avenue and Dean Street (near the footprint). Join us for coffee, tea or hot apple cider, and music by the Save Brooklyn Sym-Phony.

  • I know opinions in this group are mixed about Ratnerville and I don't want to start another thread about that. But it would be great if someone here organized a dailyheights.com team to walk in and raise funds for this Walkathon. (I'd do it myself except that I already started a team).

If you have doubts about the long-term wisdom of giving a rich developer a billion dollars of tax breaks to destroy the character and environment of our neighborhood, this is a great opportunity to rather painlessly make a contribution.

Opinion is clearly shifting about Ratnerville and, at least in its present form, it is by no means a done deal. While we have elected (and hopefully soon-to-be-elected) officials who will do their best to mitigate this mammoth boondoggle, in America, nothin' talks as loud as money in the bank.

And that's what the Walkathon is about--making sure that the amazing volunteers who have battled this issue for years with little more than their bare hands and brains, also have the financial resources to pay for the legal muscle that the Ratnerville proponents already possess in vast quantity.

Signing up to walk, organize or contribute is easy--the Website will lead you through it. It's a crucial moment in the process and your donation now could be the biggest contribution you'll ever make to this neighborhood.
