Key Food on Washington--Coup? — Brooklynian

Key Food on Washington--Coup?

I have lived in the neighborhood for 4 years & have hated Key Food ever since I couldn't find my first price & experienced the rancid-smelling meat section. Fresh Direct was a godsend, but now I'd really like to be able to occasion a store within walking distance w/ kids in tow again.

Last week I bought pickles for my 2 year old in the refrigerated section & came home to discover they were a 10-day past expiration science experiment. The place is gross.

The other day I went to the Key Food in P.S. & it was nirvana. Furthermore, it was the first time I could fit my twins in their double stroller in a grocery store.

How can we get a decent store in there?

Ideas?

  • I don't know where you are located, but Met Food on Vanderbuilt btwn Park & Prospect is the best grocery store in the hood. I believe their aisles are the most likely to fit a double wide, too.
It's been my experience that no matter where you shop in BKLYN, you need to cheap expiration dates (not that I always remember to check canned & bottled goods).
Also, on Flatbush between Sterling & Park: Natural Foods (best produce in the hood) and KeyFood (a bit pricey). Not sure if they're as double wide friendly.
Check out the Farmer's Market on Saturdays at Grand Army Plaza. Very kid friendly and it's got the best food all around. Get there early for best selection.

I agree that Met is the most decent regular grocery store, though their produce still leaves much to be desired. I also agree that Natural Land has by far the best produce this side of Flatbush (well okay it's on the PS side of the street, but close enough!) but they are definitely not double-wide friendly. The store takes a weird angular turn in the back and it's barely enough room for two unencumbered adults to pass through.
  • i'm surprised the key food on washington has not been shut down by the health dept....it is truly gross...isn't there a law about selling rancid & freezer burned meat?
