My friends looking to live alone in both Manhattan and Park Slope found better deals in Manhattan's Alphabet City -- studios for around $1400/month, which I think is a load of crap. Soon anyone making less than $200K will be living in cardboard huts along the Hudson.

Park Slope is a much friendlier neighborhood than Astoria. I like a few Greek restaurants and grocery stores in Astoria, but otherwise think it sucks. Some of my friends who lived there moved into apartments with bedbugs and argued with the landlords for months about it -- and their rent was not cheap.

The Mayor and MTA staff should hang their heads in shame for the horrid subway service that Astorians must endure. Don't get me started or I'll get so angry thinking about it that I'll punch the crap out of my computer.

Yeah, I don't really get what's going on. There are plenty of people living in Astoria: why do the trains run so infrequently?

I live off the Astoria Blvd. stop (the second stop on the N,W line heading downtown) and by the time we pull out of Astoria Blvd and head to 30th Ave. around 8:00 a.m., the train is packed wall-to-wall with people. By the time we hit Lexington/59th St., it's so crowded that you can't even move your limbs and you're practically staring right at the pores of the person next to you.

On weekend nights, it's not unusual for me to have to wait 30 minutes for the N, W train to head to Astoria from Manhattan.

The funny thing is, as far as destinations, it's really the best line in the city. It hits just about everywhere you'd want to go in Manhattan, minus the Upper East or Upper West Side; but it provides service to stations where you can easily transfer to a line that will take you to either of those locations.
