Affordable gyms in Clinton Hill/Fort Greene? — Brooklynian

Affordable gyms in Clinton Hill/Fort Greene?

My membership at the Crunch on Fulton has just expired, and don't know if I want to pay the $700+ they're wanting me to pay for another year (I've belonged to the gym since well before it converted into a Crunch).

Does anyone belong to any good gyms/fitness studios in the area that they'd like to recommend? I'd try yoga/kickboxing, but I'd like to stay around $50/month, which is $600 a year, and be able to walk there (walking to Crunch is as far as I'd go -- about a 15 minute walk for me).

Thanks much!

The Y on Bedford and Monroe is having an open house Saturday. It's $40 a month and they're waiving the joining fee if you sign up by Feb 4.

  • if all you are willing to invest in travel is a 15 minute walk than i'm afraid you are s*!t out of luck my friend. the next closest gyms are the bedford y (not a nice area) of the dodge y on atlantic (much better than bedford).

  • I guess if you aren't comfortable in Bed-Stuy at the Y there, you shouldn't join. Obviously it is hard enough to get to the gym without fearing a visit! But my boyfriend and I walk over there at six o'clock in the morning about four (okay three!) times a week without incident. They opened up a new building last year, and is relatively quiet in the morning. When I take my son there in the evenings for swim classes it seems very busy, altho a colleague tells me it calms down later in the evening. Everyone is very friendly.

That's why I did NOT join the Bedford Y and joined the Dodge Y instead.

  • ^I live about 2 blocks form the bedford Y and don't find anything scary about the area. I've lived there for going on two years now and don't have any problem walking around...

  • Thanks for the replies -- just walked to the Bed-Stuy Y and timed it at just under 15 minutes from my crib. It looks really nice on the outside--clean, modern. Gonna check out the open house tomorrow and will give my eval of the facilities when I return.

  • Visited the Bed-stuy YMCA open house today, and was shown the facilities by a very friendly Y volunteer. I was really surprised by how nice it is -- guess they did a big redo/remodel. The equipment is just as nice (if not nicer) than the Crunch I've been a member of for years. They have a really nice studio for fitness classes, basketball courts, running track, swimming pool, and new locker rooms with saunas, etc. Very clean and modern. I'm joining for sure.

Btw, the Dodge Y that I checked out (3 years ago) was just that, dodgy... this Bed Stuy gym is pretty state of the art.

    Check it out!

well then you have not checked out the Dodge Y lately as they just opened/reopened just over a year ago. very modern, the latest in equipment and they are presently refurbishing the basketball court already after just over a year. the place is huge (3 floors), clean and very inviting. i suggest you re-visit - it's much closer to you if you had a short walk to Crunch - the Beford Y has to be further from your hood quite frankly.
