Found dog (6th Ave/6th St) FOUND PERMANENT HOME (woo!) — Brooklynian

Found dog (6th Ave/6th St) FOUND PERMANENT HOME (woo!)

My husband & I found a cute brownish/reddish dog on Sixth Ave & Sixth Street around 11pm last night. He's about 25lbs, and looks to maybe be a shiba inu mixed with something else (pitt?). He was hurt - had been hit by a car - and we took him to the vet. He's still there. He had a black leash and a green and white checked collar with black buckle, but no tags or microchip. Is he yours? Do you know who he belongs to? I'm anxious to get in touch with his owner.
Thanks,
Nicky.

  • What good folks! I'm always glad to know folks like you are around. Keep us posted on the poor pup.
  • I live on 3rd Street not far off of 6th Avenue and he doesn't sound familiar. Will keep my eyes peeled for any notices on him.

BTW, that was a great thing you did-it's nice to know there are still people like you out there!
  • Please don't take him to CACC. They put expiration dates on animals and if they don't get adopted in time...well you know the rest.
  • You are a wonderful person for helping this cutie, I'll keep my eye out for signs.
  • Can you get a pic of the dog from a wider angle? Unless you are the owner, you probably wouldn't know what it looks like that close.

Someone might be able to spot simply because they walked by the pup a number of times.

Also, is this an older or younger dog?

Agreed on the notes here, you did a very good thing!
  • Subject: another pic of the dog

this is all i can do. he's in pretty bad shape, poor little guy.

  • I don't know how much this will help but I am pretty certain I have seen that dog and his owner. The problem is, I don't know the owner's name or where he lives. :(

I have seen him walking the dog on 6th ave between 1st and 2nd st.
I'm not sure what I can do to help out but if I see him, I will tell him to check out this board.

Feel like printing the picture and sticking it on a couple of lamposts there?
  • Subject: dog poster

I made a poster for the dog and gave a bunch out at the Farmers' Market / Prospect Park this morning. If you live nearby and could print out a poster or two and put them up in your neighborhood, I'd be really grateful. Just email me and I'll send you the PDF:

    Thanks!
  • Subject: thank you for your kindness

    i too must thank you.
i was walking back from the gym and heard the dog screaming in pain... ran to 'the scene' and to my amazement and extraordinary relief saw a whole group of people taking care of the dog, placing it in a car and taking it to the vet's.

my heart stopped when i heard his cries of pain...

thank you again for taking care of him
hopefully his owner will come forward and take him home!!!!!
  • Subject: update

No owner as yet, but someone just called me to say that he saw this dog being hit by a car on flatbush & 7th Ave, and that he kept running after he was hit. he must have then been hit again on Sixth and Sixth. Is there anyone living closer to Prospect Heights who would be willing to print out and post some flyers? If so please email me at nicky DOT agate AT gmail.
    Thanks!

Will you adopt the dog? How can you put pressure on the other person like that?
  • I have no intention of taking him to CACC. I called them to report him and they pretty much told me straight out that if he'd been brought there first, he'd have been euthanized. I'm trying to find a no-kill shelter that would be willing to take him, and a vet that might be willing to donate their services. I've contacted a few, but if you have any suggestions/leads, let me know.
  • This is so sad.....

And I agree that Parade Rest should not put pressure on anybody unless s/he is willing to do something .

11thStreet - I don't have much money to spare, but if you can't find a vet to donate services, I will put some money towards helping this dog.
  • i'm sure you've thought of this but have you tried listing also on craigslist?

i too have nearly none to spare but would be willing to chip in to vet fees as best i can!

    my gods,,, the poor thing...
  • You guys are great. I'm still holding out for the owner to turn up, but if I don't hear anything by tomorrow from either an owner or a vet willing to donate services, we're going to have to start doing some kind of fund raising. I'm a grad student, as is my husband, so we don't have much either. So far we've split the bill with the amazing woman who drove us and the dog to Animal Kind, but it's been almost $1000 already...

I think Parade Rest was simply making a valid point --- sometimes people are too idealistic to realize most shelters would just put a dog like this down.

Now let's help find the owner(s)!!!

  • Subject: Hamilton Dog House... (animal kind - ??)

Hi. the Hamilton Dog House in Kensington is really great, they adopt out dogs and seem to help in the most extraordinary situations.

That's amazing that the dog may have traveled from as far as Prospect Heights. Yes, some intensive flyering sounds necessary. Maybe looking to see if there are 'lost' flyers put up somewhere.

Of course, it would be nice if Animal Kind, realizing the situation and trying to help out *the community*, would have given you a cut in the rate. I mean, please! they make a lot of money there and I have had very distressing experiences with them recently so, yes, I'm disgruntled.

Anyway, Hamilton Dog House is run by Sean Casey and the email is nyanimalrescue - at - yahoo.com. It might be best to phone them. Sorry, I didn't have the phone # handy.

Thanks to everyone who helped out! It's so heartening.

    cat.
  • Do we know how he is with cats? I could possibly put him up at my place, but only if he's good with the kitties.
  • Yeah, no joy on Animal Kind helping the Community. I just called to speak to the vet, and apparently we owe another $400 for hospital stays and IV fluids/meds. She said they could keep him there though, at $65 or so a night, and that he's now expressing his own bladder and even trying to get up. She feels he's ready to go "home" and be looked after or operated on. I live in a tiny apartment with my enormous and not particularly dog friendly dog and cat, so I can't take him. I called Sean Casey but his mailbox is full, so I've emailed. I think he's going to be OK there until tomorrow, but I want to find somewhere that can take him (or the owner... hello???) by tomorrow afternoon.
  • PS I'm not sure if he's good with cats or not, but with a broken pelvis, he can't really get anywhere to chase them!
  • Subject: some more info...

That's sad re: Animal Kind especially knowing your situation. WHEN do they do something that is not for their own good? I know they are a business but come on. Have some HEART. I had a horrible situation with them and I was too distraught to ask for a break on costs but, believe me, it was not offered.
I was impressed the one time Dr. Gibson came on the board and defended his practice but I have to say, now, I am on the side of those who could not recommend them. That being said, if you are in an emergency situation, they do have some good doctors there, and it's a good option.

    Anyway!

I don't know if you tried this phone # but I think someone usually answers, if not Sean, a staff person:

    The Hamilton Dog House 155 E.3rd St Brooklyn, NY 11218 (718) 436-5163.

Thanks so much for doing this.

    cat.
  • Cat , thank you for that number! I called and talked to someone on staff, and Sean is going to call me back in a few minutes. I would be so happy if he could take the little guy! I'll keep you all updated...
  • Subject: great!

that's great! yeah! Hoping for the best.

  • Subject: GREAT NEWS!

No, we didn't find the owner, but the Mayor's Alliance for NYC Animals has agreed to take the dog to a specialty vet tomorrow for surgery and then place him in a foster home when he's better. And Brooklyn Animal Foster Network covered the remaining $450 of vet's bills. I just went to see the little guy, and he's so sweet - I don't understand how anyone could not be looking for him.

Thank you all for your help with this!
  • Yay! Good job, 11thStreet!
  • Hooray for 11th st!!!

Is there any way we could go see him and give him some love???
    Is he at Animal Kind???

Thank you again for all of your love, heart, endless support and help in this...

fingers crossed his owners will see this and come to the rescue!

my gods that poor pup has been through enough!!!

    thank you again!
  • i posted the following ad on craigslist... hopefully someone will see it and come get him!!!

  • I checked Dog Detective but no dog matching his description has been reported there as lost yet.

I've e-mailed Fido Brooklyn and Brooklyn Bridge Animal Welfare with a link to this thread.

11th Street, you might want to contact the local blogs and media. They were an essential part of my getting my stolen dog back last week. Send me a PM and I can pass along contact info.
