  • WOW - I like the idea of doing one's taxes in a bar! I think I might try that.
You're welcome! Another tip: make copies of all your documents. And black out the sensitive stuff.

I've never been so happy doing my taxes. The big refund helped!

    You're welcome!

And thanks for the Perch open mic warning. I would have run screaming from the building in that situation.

I understand...I'm searching for that too and a gym that serves scotch and a day care center with vodka -- or just a place with someone to watch my kid while I run around, drink and throw up on myself and my books.

How about a church with a good house wine.

I gotta say, my popularity as a single reader has spiked since I got the sony e-book reader. people are constantly asking me about it, which is vaguely embarrassing since I'm often reading fan fiction and/or porn on it (yes, I'm a weird, pervy dork). but yeah. reading with a gadget is apparently an open invite for convo starters.
I would think that reading porn in a bar on an e-book reader would be a great way to pick up guys. I think that you have hit on something.

Although I really miss the Slope one thing I love about England is the pubs. You can read in the pubs without feeling like a dork. Actually, in my town most of the pubs come with a selection of books you can borrow. And the music isn't so loud you can't chat with friends. And the tv is only on if there is a crucial game on (not all the fcking time like in most NY pubs).

Anyway, short answer is: move to England if you like reading while out drinking.
You left out the fact that nobody gets upset when you have kids in a pub!

Yeah, I loved the pubs there! The pubs and the Indian food. That's about it.

Cool -- a place to pick up 10-year-olds!
  • I used to read a lot in Freddie's. At the end of the bar near the window. By day, the light comes in, and at night, the neon signs in the window throw off a decent amount of light. I had an annoying roommate-with-girlfriend period and basically camped out there for a few months a couple of years back. Of course, it may not be there for ever, and gets very busy later on, but it's pretty good, and even has a few paperbacks for you to read.

Heck yeah!!! That's IT! That's what we need -- a bar where you can read a book, watch porno, and get stark as a lark drunk while tripping over strollers.
