GWHF Book Talk: The Devil’s Gentleman 03/09

The Green-wood Historic Fund presents:

A book talk with True-crime historian and author Harold Schechter
The Devil’s Gentleman-Privilege, Poison, and the Trial That Ushered in the Twentieth Century

Sunday, March 9, 2008 1:00 PM@
Green-Wood Cemetery’s Historic Chapel

Death was by poison and came in the mail.

The wayward son of a revered Civil War general and wealthy scion of an eminent New York family, the popular athletic director of Manhattan’s elite Knickerbocker Athletic Club and his cousin, a sensuous opera singer and her former lover—a cast of characters from Manhattan’s Gilded Age connected by jealousy, revenge and deadly bottles of health remedies.

Renowned true-crime historian Harold Schechter speaks on his latest book, The Devil’s Gentleman, a riveting exploration of a scandalous New York City murder (or two) in the late 1890s, the fascinating forensic science of an earlier age, and the explosively dramatic trial of Roland Molineux that became a tabloid sensation at the turn of the century.

Admission is free but space is limited. (Suggested $5 donation at the door.) Call for reservations 718.768.7300.

Following the book talk, Green-Wood historian Jeff Richman will lead a trolley tour, “Murder Most Foul,” to gravesites of murderers (including Molineux) and their victims, who reside in Green-Wood. The trolley tour is $10 per person.
