Subject: New Prospect Cafe
I loved this place. Their catfish was great, the meatloaf was awesome, everytime we ordered there we loved the food. The atmosphere was very lacking, as was their service, but those little buns they made helped make up for it. Anyone know what happened to the people that ran it? We really miss them being in the neighborhood. -

OK- so here's my confession- I used to work there (couple of years ago now).
I kinda take offense about the service- fact is, the owner never wanted more than one server on at a time (when the place was full- believe me- it was really hard- take order, get drinks, bring meals (apps and main....and then dessert!), give checks, give change........for over 20 tables. So give those that worked there a break.
The owner's name was Juan- he was the original cook there- and then eventually bought the place. Nice guy, QUIET guy, not really ambitious though- kinda just let the place take care of itself. I think he thought it could carry itself, but the weeknights were super slow, and I'm sure the rent only went up every year.
I will really miss the kitchen guys though- they were the BEST to work with! My Spanish was limited, as was there English, but we laughed the whole night.

:-sTwo entirely different placed. You're writing about Heights Coffee, now Velvet Peach, which is north of Park Place. This thread was originally about a restaurant located on Flatbush at GAP.

The Prospect Cafe was owned by a guy named Mike Cretkos (sp?)> I believe he sold it to concentrate on a new restaurant he opened somewhere around New Paltz. Before New Prospect, the space was occupied by The Garden Cafe (or Restaurant). I'm not sure if it was the same owners as the Garden on Prospect & Vanderbilt.
