Pet Adoption Visit

So my girlfriend and i are in the process of rescuing a beautiful dachshund/chihuahua mix from a Dachshund rescue group in NJ. I have heard many a horror stories regarding the pet adoption apartment visit. Does anyone have any helpful hints, insights or general helpful information in preparing for such a thing? We know that we are responsible enough, financially comfortable enough and otherwise just ready to welcome a pet into our home and would love to be as ready as possible for anything they throw our way. Thanks

  • I volunteer with a rescue group and we do house checks before an animal is adopted into a home. These house checks are friendly are generally only take 10 minutes or so. They will help you to identify any things that may need to be put away (i.e. breakable items or items that could be eaten by the dog), toxic plants, etc. The adopter is just verifying that you have a safe area for a pet. From the posting it sounds like you are very responsible and won't have any trouble passing the house check so don't worry at all. The rescue organization will also view this as a really great time for you to ask any questions that you may have about welcoming a pet into your home. Organizations that do house checks are usually the really good places to adopt from. They invest a lot of time, energy, and money into the animals that are rescued. They love the pets like they were their own. They just want to make sure that they are adopted into a loving home. Thanks for thinking of a rescued animal!
