NYT Black Gentrification — Brooklynian

NYT Black Gentrification

So I just read this article from the New York Times about Black Gentrification in Harlem— this is something that is going on in many historically black/minority communities—where middle class blacks/ minorities are moving back into these neighborhoods. This article attempts to look at both sides of the situation, but doesn’t interview enough of the long time residents to accurately depict there side. They look at the positives of the middle class bringing in new business and then the negatives hiking up rent (rent went up like 93% since 2006). The animosity towards the people moving in, to the feelings of being judged on both sides…

Anyways… I thought this article was extremely interesting since we only usually talk about one type of gentrification...

  • that was interesting; thanks for posting it.

i found the part about the woman who had grown up there but then was an outsider once she made some money particularly interesting, especially since the (comparative) racial split in our neighborhoods seems to make black gentrifiers less visible than white ones.
