Video Intensifies Abortion Debate in Albany

The New York State Catholic Conference has produced a blistering nine-minute YouTube video that assails a proposal by the Spitzer administration to update abortion laws. The creation of the video, which argues that the State Senate offers the best hope of defeating the measure, suggests that abortion could emerge as a hot issue in the state elections this fall. Republicans will try to hold on to their thin margin in the Senate, their last bastion of power in Albany, but strong turnout for the presidential election could aid Democratic efforts to take control of the entire Legislature for the first time in decades.

At issue is the Reproductive Health and Privacy Protection Act, which Mr. Spitzer proposed in April 2007 with backing from abortion rights supporters.
