Dog abuser
First, let me say that I totally did the wrong thing here. After I calmed down I realized I fucked up and probably made the situation worse. Anyway, Monday afternoon I was walking my dogs on Bedford and stopped at the light on Pacific to cross. I was on the phone with a sick friend when I notice a guy walking a pit puppy about 6-8 months old. The dog is cowering behind the guy which pisses him off so he yanks the leash up so the dog is dangling by it's neck off the ground. Then he starts smacking it in the face, lets it down and tries to keep walking. The puppy is terrified and doesn't want to follow him. So the guy repeats his dangling dog off leash while smacking it in the face bit. This is the corner with the homeless shelter in the armory and there are plenty of guys hanging out in front. No one is saying anything. I don't have the light so I'm looking to see if cars are coming. The guy turns onto Bedford dragging the dog and then shoves it down on the ground. He's kneeling over it grabbing it's face and scaring the shit out of it.
Here's where I fucking lose it. I yell and cross the street (thankfully checking to see if there are cars coming). The guy doesn't move and I walk over to him yelling that the dog isn't following him because it's afraid because he's beating the shit out of it. The guy stands up and our encounter goes something like this:
Dog abuser: "This is my fucking dog, mind your business. I got plenty other dogs at home"
Me: something about him being such a big man beating on a little dog.
DA: "You got your 2 big dogs, why don't you do something?"
Me: "Because I'm not a little bitch like you who needs my dogs to fight my battles for me"
DA: Fuck you or something
Me: "What a punk ass bitch beating up a helpless dog"
DA: "What are you going to do? White bitch, this ain't your hood"
Me: More comments about his manhood
This was all as he was walking away from me. As we're arguing, a car is stopped at the light and the passenger tells me to stop fighting and be peaceful. I told the guy to tell the bitch to stop beating his dog, he just told me more peace shit before they pulled away. At this point I'm livid and still on the phone with my friend. While I was talking to the guy in the car, the dog abuser walked away, calling me a white bitch again. I end up walking down Pacific trying to convince my friend I don't have a death wish.
Here's what I should have done. I should have followed the guy, called the cops and not let him know I was doing it. Maybe then that poor dog would have had a chance. The dog was a light brown brindle pit and looked to be 6-8 months old. I didn't get a good look so I don't know if it was a boy or a girl. The guy was about 5'8", sort of stocky, probably in his early to mid twenties, medium skin tone with his hair in short braided twists. He was walking down Pacific and turned left onto Bedford toward Dean.
Please, if anyone sees this guy don't be a dick like me. If you see where he lives, let me know and I'll report it since I witnessed him abusing this dog. Also, does anyone know who I should call in a situation like this? The ASPCA says to call 911, but maybe the local precinct would be better? I want to be prepared the next time something like this happens.
P.S. This guy wouldn't have touched me, he was a total punk bitch and a complete coward. I'm just afraid that he took his anger out on the puppy.

Oh man, case, you got chutzpah. I don't know if I would have had the nerve to call the guy out like that, but I know I would have been incensed-- and probably paralyzed. I will keep my eyes open for you.
So, he was walking from Pacific bet. Nostrand and Bedford and then took a left onto Bedford toward Dean?
I'm betting that someone so brazen about abusing his dog in public will be spotted again. And now we'll all be prepared with a plan. Would love to help rescue that dog god knows how many others he probably has hidden away.
So, so, so sorry you had to go through that.
-
Lucille, thank you so much. I've been beating myself up over the way I reacted, it didn't help that dog one bit. I don't know if I'd say I have chutzpah, more like a really bad temper when it comes to animal abusers. There are very few things that "get my irish up" or if I'm honest, brings out the teen thug in me. After it happened I was thinking about the mugging threads here. I should have sucker punched him and grabbed his dog!
-
i may have seen that dog walking on bergen or dean b/w franklin and bedford yesterday or the day before. the owner was kind of pulling him/her forward because he/she was lagging behind him. i didnt see any of the abuse that you were talking about (maybe because i only saw them for a second), but the behavior of the dog seems to match your description (cowering behind the owner, not wanting to walk). the dog i saw was a pit, kind of small, and light brown. looked like it could have been 6-8 months old.

I commend you on your actions, and I also don't have any tolerance for animal abusers. Those situations are difficult, and unfortunately, many Cops are unaware of animal cruelty laws. For an immediate response by Police, calling 911 is the proper protocol. The ASPCA will do long term investigations, however there are probably about 10 "Animal Cops" in NYC, and usually cannot respond to emergencies in a timely fashion. If you do happen to see where this "punk ass bitch" lives, you can make a formal complaint with the ASPCA and they will send officers out to his residence to investigate. The more evidence you have, the stronger the case will be.
Heres some charges from the Agriculture and Markets Law:
353: Overdriving, torturing and injuring animals, failure to provide proper sustainance (Misdemeanor)
353-a: Aggravated Cruelty to Animals (Felony) -
Subject: dog abuser
Its Dakotas way
Once again, Caseopele tries to help the animals.
Don't beat yourself up. You've brought it to everyones attention and they can keep an eye out for this coward. -
mr. met, that sounds like the dog I saw. It was doing the same thing, lagging behind the guy while he tried to pull it.
KWAC, thank you for letting me know the proper procedure that will get the best result. I wish my camera wasn't broken so I could have taken video of the guy. I'm going to keep walking my dogs around there and keep an eye out for this piece of shit. Thanks again.
It was interesting that during the whole altercation my dogs didn't bark once. Usually, they get annoying when they see another dog but it was like they knew something was wrong. Dakota, thanks. But you know me, I'll probably keep beating myself up about it.

i was walking down classon with my dog last night around park pl and a group of about 10 teenagers passed by us, all guys. one of them jumped towards my dog and stomped on the ground in front of her, trying to scare her. he says, "that's a bitch-ass dog, son." honestly, what the fuck is wrong with people?

Well, it's very clear that you're the one with the problem. You don't use Stringer as an extension of your manhood!
Seriously, though. I have no idea what the hell is wrong with these guys. They beat the shit out of their dogs to make them mean, use them to fight for their entertainment. They think it makes them tough but it really makes them huge pussies. If they really want to be tough they should be fighting their damn selves, fight club style. Take away their mean dogs, their boys, their guns, and what do they have? Just their little bitch asses. Any one of these guys who do shit like that would probably get their asses kicked in a real fight with someone their own size. Fucking cowards. -
Amen.
by the way, case, I have a hard time envisioning you as a teenage thug.
Thanks again for your good work.
I will keep my eyes open.
Me and my old dog hardly get that far from home, but I do walk that path to work and have a friend who works in the shelter. We'll get that sonofabeeyatch somehow. -
I think I saw them today about 5:30 pm at St Marks & Bedford heading toward Dean & Bedford. The pup was following willingly today. There was woman with him today - a bit younger.
I was driving and tried to go around the block to follow but because they were jaywalking, they were gone by the time I came around.
I thought he kind of looked like Malcolm-Jamal Warner.
If I hadn't saw this post first, nothing I saw today would have made me suspicious -
Damn, thanks guys! I think he lives right around there, within a block or two. I've been walking my dogs around there looking for him but I remembered something. There's a house towards the end of Bergen right before Nostrand with a fenced in driveway (a few houses before the Starlite actually). I remember seeing 2 brownish pits behind the fence one day. I'm sure this prick fancies himself a breeder so it wouldn't surprise me if he had the parents.
Lucille, I was a good kid but a bad teenager. One of the best things my mom did for me was yank me out of HS and make me get a job at 16. I failed the 10th grade twice because I was hanging out in the Amsterdam projects during the day, and some unsavory places at night. I'm loathe to admit it but there was much hanging out, drinking of 40's, smoking of blunts, questionable boyfriends, and occasional fights. Working from 6:30 in the morning to 4 in the afternoon, standing on my feet all day worked better than anything else could have.
Man, I hope we can find this jerk. Thanks again! -
Advice needed on other stomach turning dog behavior...I witnessed a crowd of a dozen men and two pit bulls in Brower Park a couple of weeks ago and for a half hour the owners were baiting the two dogs against each other on their respective leashes.
It struck me as a training session for fighting. Would this have been an appropriate instance to call the precinct (718-735-0611)? -
I think so, yes.
911 may also have been appropriate because instigating dog fighting is a crime in this city. -
If I ever get to see any of those guys mistreating their dogs I will definitely call 911, if necessary, say "that one of them said he has a gun". The bottom line is, whatever is necessary to get innocent dogs out of abuser's hands, that's what i will need to do.
-
I finally had a moment to really peruse this thread and am infuriated. I commend everyone's efforts in trying to find these abusers. and thank you, KWAC, for advising everyone as to proper procedure for handling future situations.
personally, I'm a big fan of boxing - I have no problem with two adult human beings deciding to beat each other up. but the minute they're messing with kids, or animals, or someone weaker than them, I kinda lose my cool. I can't figure out why proving your prowess toe to toe with someone else went out of style and proving it using something helpless is now cool. so fucking lame. you'd think an NFL star losing millions of dollars and ending up in jail for a few years would show these brats that these actions are not smart, cool, or financially savvy, in addition to the whole punk-ass aspect. -
alafairnadia, unfortunately these punks think going to jail IS cool, so vick isn't really gonna serve as a deterrent.

Exactly, I completely agree. I used to box when I was a teenager and it did a lot for me as a person. (This was after my mom yanked me out of school.) I think there's a big difference between someone who is willing to step up and fight compared to someone who only thinks of running away and coming back with a gun or 10 of their boys. -
Casepeople, have you ever tried to sell the rights to your life story as a film or a novel? I'm only half kidding...
Haven't seen any sign of the dog, but am keeping my eyes open. -

Haha, my life only seems interesting on the surface. I've been sick the past few days so no long walks with the dogs. I just walked them over to Prospect to try and find those kittens. Hopefully I'll feel well enough by Thursday to go looking for that pup again.

I'm free tonight so if you'd like a walking-mate (and since I've never met you) PM me. I have no qualms about toe-to-toe (especially after the awesome poker lesson I got last night) or calling the cops. -
alafairnadia, I guess it's probably too late tonight huh? I went back to work tonight so I didn't get to check my email until now. I'm still a bit slow from being sick.
What about tomorrow night? -

I'm sorry- but you watched this happen for a HALF AN HOUR and your actually asking if you should have called the police????

People who do nothing are part of the problem. -
I think the weirdest part of this is you calling the guy "punk bitch" and making "comments about his manhood." I know you were worried about the dog and all, but it seems like playing on all this messed up gender stuff is not going to help matters. I appreciate your honesty on this board, but your comments seem to suggest that "real men" don't hurt dogs...meaning only gay men? Feminine men? Women?

Honestly, I think you're reading something into my comments that isn't there. Only cowards hurt dogs. Not gay men, feminine men, or women. Guys like this act really tough, the vicious pitbull is an accessory. It's supposed to reflect how "hard" these jerks are. What they're actually showing is that they are little bitches who need to dominate "lesser" beings to feel like a man. (Their idea of a man, not mine.) I admit I'm having a hard time understanding your point of view, perhaps you could explain what you mean by gender stuff? -
i also read this as an attack on gay men, feminine men, and homosexuals.

It may be politically incorrect, but in my humble opinion, anyone who treats an animal like that is a punk ass beeyatch. Especially when his sole reason for doing so is to prove how hard he is. He's the one with the issues, not case. I just admire that casepeople had the cahones to call him what he is, to his face. That's hard.
Howdy, Stranger!
