FISA bill vote on Thursday — Brooklynian

FISA bill vote on Thursday

edited November -1 in The Lounge / Random Stuff
On Thursday, the House of Representatives is expected to hand phone companies a get-out-of-jail-free card for illegally turning over private phone records to the government. This issue has popped up every once in awhile on this board, so you probably know about it.

Today is Wednesday, so there isn't much time left. Tell your representative that you oppose any effort to cover-up illegal spying on Americans. This link is an online petition with info, and it will sort out who is your House Rep to be emailed, if you don't already know. I don't love the online petition as political action, but at least this one is on a timed deadline.
So act now.

Neither the phone companies nor this White House should be above the law. Americans have had their rights violated, and now Congress may pass a bill that gives us no legal remedy. This is an outrage I hope you will vote against. When you are accused of breaking the law, you should have your day in court, not an act of Congress that makes the violation go away.

My basic right to make a phone call, send an e-mail or search the Internet without the government monitoring that activity is part of the supposed-to-be inalienable freedoms we hold dear in our supposed-to-be free and democratic society.

Please take a stand against bullying from the White House and the phone lobby and reject any FISA legislation that grants immunity to telephone companies for illegally turning over our private phone records to the government. The rights of Americans have been violated. Please stand firmly with the American public and against the destruction of our basic liberties and the rule of law.
