Protestors Gather To Raise Money To Block Brooklyn Development Plan
November 14, 2005

Community groups, leaders, and citizens gathered for a walk-a-thon Sunday to raise money to protest developer Bruce Ratner's proposed Atlantic Rail Yards project in Brooklyn.

The protestors say they're going to fight the development to the end.

"What Goliath doesn't have that we have is a community, a soul, and we care dearly about this community and we will not let developers like Forest City Ratner take it over and push the people who made it what it is out of it. And we intend to win," said Daniel Goldstein of Develop Don’t Destroy Brooklyn.

The proposed development would be the largest in Brooklyn history. It calls for 17 skyscrapers and an arena on 24 acres of property in downtown Brooklyn.

i tried to count during the pre-rally, and guestimated somewhere between 300-350.

there seemed to be a few people who joined in progress, no way to guess how many. and, no way to guess how many stayed afterwards, or showed up without having walked, but the post-party filled Soda to about 60-70% capacity.

so, i'd probably stand by my low 300's estimate.
  • Subject: walk numbers

350 registered to walk. over 400 walked. over 60k was raised. both great numbers!

you can still donate in the name of those who walked if you want, at http://www.dddb.net/walkathon

No offense to Rosie, but I really don't her point.

    :?

Can anyone explain it to me?

Or is it a point sans point?

  • Well I'll take a stab at explainging. I think she means that high density housing means people are not connected as they seem to be in PH- this board is a good example of the effect of small neighborhoodd. The small scale, neighborhood businesses etc. The other is did you ever take a look at the people who hang around Madison Square Garden -well some of them will be heading over here when the stadium is built.
  • You got to keep them seperated!

One of the many failings of the urban renewal of the 60's and 70's was the building of large housing projects. It may not be exactly the same with this Ratner project, but at least right now if I don't "know" all of my neighbors, I do recognize many their faces.
