Browse through the Crown Heights board and the Williaamsburg, et al boards here to get a sense of what goes on in the neighborhoods. You'll get a variety of opinions, but they may give you some ideas about where to start.
Personally, I live in CH and have no issues with personal safety, but YMMV. Its going to be dependant on where you are from, what you are used to and what you want in the way of amenities near your home. If you are one of those people that is working 18 hour days and you are home to sleep and change clothes, there are parts of both of those neighborhoods where you'll find great apartments that will cost you less than some of the tonier neigborhoods. If you are working from home and want to be able to walk to the gym in the middle of the day, or go to a local cafe for coffee and wifi then not so much.
Hope that helps... -

No thank you, that actually helps alot. I'm a twenty year old female moving from rural[I mean rural] NJ to the city with another female friend. I will be working a lot, and really could care less about how nice my apartment is, as long as it is relatively inexpensive, and in a place where I will feel safe walking home from work late at night. Both of my parents are from the city, so I grew up around it all really, I know all of manhattan like the back of my hand, I am just nowhere near as savvy when it comes to Brooklyn. I know the prospect park area, and the greenpoint/williamsburg area, simply because of visiting friends, or seeing a band. I would like to be in or somewhat near an area with a good night life though, because hey, I'm young, and turning twenty one around when I move there hah.
