Eastern Bed Stuy — Brooklynian

Eastern Bed Stuy

I'm currently looking at an apartment on 464 Decatur Street in Bed Stuy, and wanted to get some input on that general area. It seemed a little sketchy when I visited today, especially around the Utica Ave. A/C stop on Fulton Street.

Anyway, does anyone have any advice about this area? I could really use it.

  • if by sketchy you mean ungentrified then yeah, you got a fair idea of what the place is about. anything past the Clinton/Washington stop on the C train would probably fall into that category.

it's new york though, so you must *always* be alert and smart. if you are then you'll probably be okay. at worst you'll get mugged and there are worse things that could happen, to be honest.
  • My all time favorite response on this message board.
Don't rent anywhere which puts a fear inside you.
  • I live near the Utica stop, and I think it's really lovely here.

People are compulsively nice, I feel completely safe during the day and safeish late at night (which is more a function of long stretches without anything open, not about actual scary experiences)

You're close to Olivino and one stop away from Foodtown, it's all good. : )
  • So the area near the Clinton/Washington stop is considered safe, overall? I understand this is a very subjective question.
  • I find it to be very safe. There are almost always people around there and plenty of businesses to duck into if you feel like someone is being shady around you. It is true that there have been some incidents of violence in the area over the years that I've lived here, but I think you probably have that everywhere and I take it as a good sign that such incidents are often discussed among neighbors. Also, most of the violent incidents seem to be disputes that escalated or drama between friends/acquaintances/'business' associates.

Overall, I love it by the Clinton-Washington stop. Now if only the C train would improve its level of service and reliability...
Also, someone drops dookies in our subway stop regularly, so always look where you are walking in the station
