hey....I was just going to email you that I am going to go to Fairway tomorrow. Email me if you want to tag along. They have an extensive produce section
-
Argh, you always go on a day I can't go!

I'll check to see if they have any. How many are you looking for? I can always drop 'em off on the way back if you're home
-
Oh, just a couple ...

aight. I'll look (btw, there's a chance I won't go until Sun....I'll know tomorrow morning....if I go Sunday, I can take you then).
p.s. email me so we don't bore everybody else ;-) -
hubby just came back from Fairway -- they are there.

really? the ones with the big green outer husk? Never noticed those in Fairway. Don't you need a machete to open those?
I would think Chinatown would be your best bet. I just paid $6 for a fairly mediocre, small papaya at Fairway...I love Fairway, but they're a bit overpriced on a lot of stuff. You can also buy the coconut water/juice at any Asian market. -
yep. these:

Ok, what the heck do you do with those? (Remember you're talking to someone who hasn't used her stove in at least 2 months.)

You pretty much do what they show in the picture....hack them open, stick in a straw and drink the coconut water, which is kinda sweet, kinda coconuty...but a lot more bland than the juice you get from a mature (brown) coconut. Bit of an acquired taste, but it's refreshing. You can also scrape some of the coconut meat from the inside...which is softer than a mature coconut.
And then you make a coconut bra! (not really...those come from the mature coconuts too, i think...but hey, we can all dream) -
I buy coconut water all the time, but I'd like to find fresh coconuts to try making kefir with: http://www.bodyecology.com/mcoconutkefir.php. I guess I actually need four coconuts.

damn "you people" all to hell. I am walking around my house singing "you put da lime in da coconut, drink 'em both up"
-
I didn't make it to Fairway today, but I just came back from Costco ($200 later). They don't have them there, although I was on the lookout for them

Homer: You put da beer in da coconut and drink it all up
You put da beer in da coconut and throw da can away ...
[throws a beer can at Ned]
Ned: Homer!
Homer: You throw da can away ...
[throws another beer can]
Ned: I said, Homer!
Homer: You throw da can away. -
Come to CH. There are a bunch of Jamacian guys on Nostrand between St John's & Lincoln Place who sell green coconuts, brown coconuts, fresh sugar cane, as well as a bunch of spicy stuff (in big jars labeled "HOT!!") They have a storefront but in nice weather they usually are just sitting on the sidewalk with the best of their wares.
-
I knew there had to be some places like that somewhere! Thanks!
The spicy stuff sounds intriguing. -
Dang it all, y'all are making me nostalgic for Costa Rica. Down there, guys walk along the street (or the beach) with green coconuts on ice. For about 50 cents, they'll hack one open with a machete and give it to you with a straw. It's fantastic. I may have to head over to Clinton Hill and find those Jamaican guys.
-
I'm wondering if the Spanish street vendors in Sunset Park do something like this too.
Yes, I'm longing for my beach days on Isla Mujeres with the coco guy and his machete
Howdy, Stranger!
