best soup in the slope?

natstar
edited November -1 in Park Slope
I recently had some oral surgery and am forced to eat strictly soup and apple sauce this week! I've had enough jewish penicillin to make anyone go mad.

any recommendations for the best bowl o' soup in the neighborhood?

thanks in advance!

  • Not in Park Slope, but my favorite soup nearby is the Tortilla Soup from Chavella's. It's limey and awesome.
  • There's a little coffee/soup/flower store on the west side of 4th ave between 10th and 11th (I think) that sells a couple fresh (cheap!) soups a day. Used to get them for dinner on the way home all the time when I lived nearby, and I miss them dearly now.

I went by there a couple weeks ago and it was all cleared out. They also made very nice tamales. Anybody know what happened, or if they are coming back/relocating?

natstar, how about switching over to thai soups for a little variety?
Gai Tom Kha...spicy lemongrass coconut chicken soup
I know Lemongrass isn't what they used to be, but I think the soup is still okay.
  • Sorry you aren't feeling well! They sell "Hale & Hearty" soups at the Union Market. Pretty good selection and not too expensive.

Also, the french bakery next to Smiling Pizza on 7th Ave at 9th street makes some pretty decent soups.
  • The lentil soup at Olive Vine. YUM.

I wish I knew what happened as well. I'm never sure if they are gone for good or not. Namely because since they closed, they put in a different front window and door. Who knows. I'm holding out hope that they will open again as it gets warmer. It would really be a shame if they didn't.

Oooh, that sounds yummy. I hadn't heard of Chavella's. Thanks for the info!
  • beware, chavella's is in the ever-dangerous crown heights

so.delicious. And close to the BBG/Bklyn Museum.
LA Taqueria sometimes has a tortilla chicken soup w/avocado too, not too shabby. And more likely to deliver in Park Slope.
But c.h.a.v.e.l.l.a...love their tortas, vegetarian or chorizo/papas

caaahyoko, could you post a new thread if Flores y Tamales shack revives?
I'm not around there very often.

yea, their tortas are very good.
  • It was the Hot and Sour soup at Red Hot. When it was good, it was really good. But that doesn't do any of us any good.

I like the lentil soup at Olive Vine as well.

I've had good soups at Press 195 of all places. Don't know why that surprised me, but it does.
  • below vvvvvvvvvvv
  • Actually, the Park Cafe has decent matzoth ball, vegetable chicken and beef barley. 7th Avenue Donuts has good soup as well. Mr. Falafel and D'vine Taste has better, in my opinion, lentil than Olive Vine and Hunan Wok on 7th by Union has pretty good vegetable wonton soup. Castillos on Carlton and Park Pl. has excellent chicken and whatever else kind of soups. If you're willing to travel a bit Nuevos Mexicos makes good seafood soup and Honduras restaurant on 5th Ave and Prospect Ave., right next to Park Slope Plumbing has an excellent shellfish soup.

Otherwise, it's off to Wonton Garden on Mott St. for the best soups and stews in NYC.
  • thanks everyone for the suggestions!!!!

as a side note: i used to frequent the place on 4th avenue--which was actually what got me thinking about soup and starting this thread...

I wonder if it closed due to increased rent on 4th ave? I used to live across the street on 4th and 11th and my rent wasn't renewed once the condos started going up...

off to go get me some new soup! 1st stop:thai! thanks again :)

Kiku on 5th Avenue has a good spicy seafood broth, Nana on 5th Avenue has a good hot and sour soup (but the vegetarian version is the most flavorful) and, on 7th Avenue, Mango Thai's lemongrass soup is OK.

the hot and sour or coconut soups at Lemongrass on 7th Ave are some of my favorite comfort foods nearby
