Will they take it?
I have an old water heater and a radiator that I need to dispose of. 311 says I can place the water heater out for metal bulk pickup on my recycling day, but, having not had the best of luck w/the sanitation guys taking stuff, I'm wary.
What's the chance that if I put these two items out, the trash guys will take them?
And, if they won't, what do I do with them?

i've had decent luck with bulk pickup in the past. but my only recommendation to you would be to put one item out at a time. those are both heavy and large items, and if there's only one piece they'll have less to gripe about. NYC.gov says sanitation will take up to six items from one address, but speaking from experience: that's iffy at best.
if by chance you own your home here, i would put the water heater out on recycling day, and the radiator in the front yard for one week. why, you ask? well, if the radiator is cast iron it's possible that one of the many people who take scrap metal for resale will see it and cart it off for themselves, saving both you and sanitation the trouble! that's happened to me more than once as well.
good luck! -
If it is a cast iron I agree with shish - someone will take it especially in Park Slope.
You might also be able to sell it or donate it to some places like Old Good Things or Build it Green NYC. Check out brownstoner.com for other places that might take it/buy it from you. -
Thanks to both of you--not 15 minutes after the last response, some fellas in a van rolled by and asked if they could take both the heater and the radiator, and took the empty hot water heater sitting in our basement out to boot.
