Where are the basic amenities around 5th and PPW?

In a month, we'll be moving to PPW and 5th street. Given that I've never lived below union, I have limited knowledge and rather than go on a wild goosechase, i fIgured this would ask the nice folks of this msg board.. :D

I would love to know where the residents around those blocks shop, eat and drop-off laundry..you know..the basics. Also, do most of you stick to the F train or do you walk / take the bus to the 2/3/B/Q? Any advice orsuggestions are appreciated..

  • In case you're not familiar with http://www.smalltownbrooklyn.com/parkslopeN/northsouth/7thave/7thave5.htm, it shows each business on each block throughout the neighborhood.

I'm just below 7th Avenue on 2nd Street, and I rarely shop or dine on 8th Ave (except for the 12th St. Bar & Grill, which has been excellent for many years) or PPW. But come down from PPW to 7th Avenue, and you'll find decent restaurants (NoNo, Two Boots, etc.) within just a few blocks from 5th St. There's also Dizzy's at 8th Ave and 9th Street. There are dry cleaners on 2nd and I think 4th Streets, fresh fish shops flanking both side of 3rd Street, and Tarzian Hardware and Tarzian West (housewares).

Plus, of course, there's Prospect Park, and that ain't bad at all!
  • There's a good vet right there if you have any varmints.
