Places to watch baseball

Now that baseball is here, where are the fun places to watch the games on TV? I go to 200 Fifth sometimes and there's always a game on at Johnny Mack's, but are there other places that have the Extra Innings package where you can see a variety of games (not just local teams)?

Also, are there places where more Mets fans tend to go? With ticket prices so high, I figure I'm going to go to fewer games this year but sometimes would like to get off the couch and go watch them some place.

I was looking forward to the old Circles becoming a sports bar because it's so close to my apt, but now that that fell through, it got me thinking where else can I go?

Do folks in general care much about baseball around here?

Yes, last year I saw a Yankees and a Mets fan get in a bad fight on the Q train. I've only watched Mets games in Manhattan bars.
  • You may want to try Rhythm & Booze at Prospect & 10th Ave

How is that place? I haven't been there since it was McBears. What is the crowd like?
  • the crowd is mixed, no thugs
  • Hi guys,

    Embarrassing follow-up question.

    ...

Are there any Red Sox-friendly local bars? I've heard there's one in the Village and another in Washington Heights, but boy it'd be nice to find a place in this area where they show Sox games. Even if it's on a black and white TV in some basement broom closet..
  • I am sorry, but I don't believe there is any "Red Sox friendly" bar in NYC. Just like I wouldn't want to cheer for Yankees in a Boston bar either. Look, if you really want to, go to a bar quietly. Hide your Red Sox hat somewhere. Only take it out if Red Sox is losing. If the game goes the other way, I recommend you to stay in the closet. You wouldn't want to be in a bar cheering for Red Sox with a bunch of drunken Yankees fans!

what would really be embarassing if you were asking for places to watch the Rays or the Marlins play! :)

Figures that you can find a neighborhood in NYC where people are rooting for any soccer team around the world, but there's no bar for people who grew up 200 miles away.
Anyway, I'll keep asking around, and maybe bite the bullet on the MLB.tv thing.

This bar on 2nd Avenue is a Red Sox hang out based on some info on meetup.com
  • Dixiecup,

The Gate (5th Ave./3rd St.) is a "Red Sox" bar vis-a-vis the Yankees.

Freddy's in Prospect Heights (Dean/6th Ave.) is a predominately Red Sox-supporting bar.
  • lighthouse has the baseball package (5th ave & carroll or thereabouts). it's a good place to catch a game as long as it isn't overrun with d-bags (stay away on sundays during football season).

i think loki is a mets bar but i'm not positive.
  • It ain't easy being a Red Sox fan in PS, but I'd be game to hook up with fellow travelers and take in the occasional game. The Lighthouse is not much of a joint, but it is friendly territory. Professor Thom's (in Manhattan) is a step up, but further from home.

Anyone interested to take in a game sometime can PM me privately.

Incidentally, I was in Toronto on the weekend and took in the dreadful series with the Jays. Opening night was the worst. I believe I was the ONLY sox fan in the entire stadium. Apparently on opening night they open all the jails in southern ontario and bus them to the 500 level of the ball park, so that they can boast of a sell-out. There were at least 5 fights in a neighbouring section - all going simultaneously. In the absence of actual Sox fans, several drunken Jays fans decided to rip their shirts off and challenge a bunch of business-attired dudes in a lower row. The suits actually held their own against the Matthew McConaghay clones, but there appeared to be a lot of collateral damage to innocent bystanders who got caught in the crossfire.

The bar on the corner of West 4th and 7th Avenue in the village is a Red Sox bar. I don't even think they play the Yankees when they're on unless it's against the Sox.
  • I believe Old Time Brooklyn is referring to The Riviera.

Any yankee friendly bars around in the South Slope? Or is this solid Mets country?
  • OTB--Where exactly is this place? Or what's its name?
  • Subject: The Mets? how did they do in the postseason last year?

Hi there. A Philadelphian Park-Slope transplant here. I couldn't pass up the chance to gloat.

    Go Phils!
  • Amity Gal is right I think on the name. Total Red Sox bar.
  • I'll second 200 5th. I watch all my football there and although I'm not a huge baseball fan, I know they have all the games.

Side bar: Besus, I love the kitty photo, but I confess that whenever I see "besus", I think "baby Jesus"

Nonsense. I've rooted openly for the Sox in bars all over the city and never had a problem. The stadium can be a bit hairy, but that's a whole other, and the bar you are talking about is on 7th Avenue and I believe Bleecker, maybe Christopher.

    Let's Go Mets!

Let's just say that if there is any relation to a "baby jesus," it's probably not the one you were thinking about... 8)
  • I have to say that as a Mets fan, I will root for the Red Sox ANY DAY over the Skankees. :D So maybe you should look for a Mets friendly bar and you're all set!
  • let's go yanks!!

raised in Miami....Yankee fan, but nothing wrong with some Marlin baseball.
  • Thanks for the suggestions, guys! Glad to see I'm not the only fan-in-exile round these parts. A Yankee-fan friend is coming in from Jersey this afternoon so we'll have to find a mutually acceptable place to catch the game. Should be.. interesting...
