one more car insurance question...

i know you guys love these. sorry, it's just everyone is always super helpful so hopefully this is the last one.

okay, so i'd like to switch to ny this week. how do i go about doing this? do i call an insurance company first? do i go to ny dmv first and get the plates? do i get it inspected first/last? what's the order of the process?

  • i just did this last week.
    1) Get insurance. You need NY state insurance to register your car. You also need a NY DL if you dont have one (note that the addresses on the DL and on the insurance dont need to match as long as its both NY)
    2) Fill out MV-82 application for registration. You might also be able to fill out an exemption from sales tax application if you bought the car out of state while living out of state.

    Go to dmv. wait forever. Theyll give you your tags on the spot and a 10 day inspection tag so you've got 10 days to get it inspected. Thats it.
