What the hell?
I am sorry if most reader here are African American or people of color, but blacks always attack Jews in my neighborhood and there is never ever and investigation let alone an arrest! all the police do is arrest the Jews! I am too pissed to write any more!

Oh, and if that is the one, then here are a couple possible reasons.

#1 (First and foremost) The kid was the son of a cop.
#2 He was reportedly tear gassed.
#3 He was reportedly beaten with nightsticks by Crown Heights Shmira members, who came out of a labeled SUV.

And before you read too much into it, the kid was treated at a Jewish hospital.

As far as the Grand Jury, I generally feel that any argument that starts with, "Well, they let *them* get away with it," is silly. Whether it is from one group complaining that another gets away with illegal parking, or something more serious like this. I would like all crime to be prosecuted equally, but I am not about to advocate letting someone walk just because someone else may get or has gotten a raw deal. And as far as blacks getting good treatment in the criminal justice system? You have _got_ to be kidding. They get the rawest deal of all. Which is not to say that they should now get special treatment, but convening a grand jury is hardly special treatment. Perhaps it has something to do with the Shmira angle, I believe there has been some tension with them claiming to be law enforcement related when they are not? Or something like that?

Considering that I live in the Hasidic area of Crown Heights, I think the OP is being biased. Yes, there are some Blacks that attack Jewish people and the same thing goes in the other direction. It is a shame since the communities live side by side and considering that they do live side by side, I think that the majority have no problem with each other. In order for tensions to relax and people to move forward then all of our preconceived notions need to be thrown out the window with the dishwater. Once we start comparing that this group does this and that group does that we are heading right back to the type of mentality that the neighborhood has strived so hard to break free from.

Instead of making it a Black and Jewish issue, make it an issue that it was wrong no matter who was concerned. Also, I don't see these attacks that you are referring to but I know for a fact that I was menaced by some Jewish kids in the neighborhood but I cannot and will not place that on all of the Jewish people that live there, only those that were involved in the menacing. I would ask that you do the same and that way people can move forward.

That does cause issues in the area and can cause tensions to reach the boiling point, as it did in the past.

I'm sorry, I don't know what Brooklyn you are talking about, but it sure ain't this one.

NOBODY "attacks" Hasidics and gets away with it. They will sound the air raid sirens, and scramble the troops. I know that from my lifetime of living in this borough, if there is one group that has got the establishment firmly behind them, it is the Hasids. Look at what happened a couple of years ago when an NYPD cop tried to write a rebbe a traffic ticket in Borough Park, there was practically a full-scale riot. Not to mention, they've got their own cops to back them up too.

Obviously you have an agenda behind your message.

In the months I've been living here, I've heard far more anti-black comments in the Jewish community than anti-Jewish comments in the black community. The one thing that will bring all the ugliness of '92 back will be to indulge in us-against-them rhetoric.

Crime is crime. Treat it as such.

One thing that worries me is that there are claims being made (not in the newspaper articles, but in the comments section) that the black victim got what he deserved because he was throwing rocks at them.

I have a hard time believing that the son of a cop would indulge in such behavior. And if he truly was, it would be far more effective to talk to the young man's father if he was. His father wouldn't tolerate such behavior.

These baseless accusations have got to stop.

I was with you until here. I have family in Staten Island that live on a street with several current and former officers. And I have seen what their kids do. I'm not saying the kid in question did or did not do anything, and further even if he _did_ do something, I'm not saying that the something deserved tear gassing and nightstick beatings. But to say that he obviously didn't do anything bad just because he is the son of an officer is a bit silly.

Hmm.. I should have phrased it as, he wouldn't have done such a thing if he thought there was any chance of his dad finding OUT.

In *my* experience, children of law enforcement officers tend to be pretty law-abiding themselves. OTOH, children of clergy tend to be hellions.

But that's getting away from the main point. I find it disturbing that people are claiming that this kid threw rocks yet NONE of the papers covering this story mention it. If it were true, I would imagine SOME news outlet would have mentioned it, yet people are throwing this accusation around as if it were fact.

One other thing, we keep referring to this kid as a kid, but he's 20 years old. I don't know of a lot of 20 year olds that walk around throwing rocks at anyone. That coupled with the fact that he's never been in any trouble of any kind (and trust me if you're the kind of 20yr old that chucks rocks, you've been in trouble with the law before) lead me to belive that the rock throwing is just an excuse.

Good point, he is a twenty year old adult college student. And just as devil's advocate, where did the info come from that "he's never been in any trouble of any kind"?

I read it in one of the news reports. The article said he had never been arrested and had no criminal record. I'll try to find the reference.

Subject: Can't We All Just Co-Exist

To the OP-- our communities have already been through the hurt, anger, death and destruction that this type of devisiveness insights. The stigma of August 1991 still lingers in the air. So rather than trying to restoke a fire that has taken years to get under control, why not post things that will help us stop these types of incidents, racially motivated or otherwise. Alternatively, just do not post at all.

Now they want a grand jury to investigate this crime?

So I ask you, in the last 3 years watching attack after attack against Jews, some a “mere” mugging and some a vicious beating and many with Anti-Semitic slurs emanating from the black kids while beating up Jews all over the neighborhood, how can you call this fair? Enough is enough! You have to stop spewing your Anti-Semitic hatred over to your kids! Yes on the south side off Eastern Parkway there are some with allot of money, but there are mostly families that struggle just to keep afloat.

So what are you saying should be done? Let those that beat the victim go? How would that help with community relations between the Jewish and African Americans? I honestly think it's naive to think that looking the other way in this situation would make things all better. What would have helped is if someone talked to them before they went out causing trouble.

Regardless of color, religion, sex, orientations, etc; if you beat someone senseless you deserve to be caught and prosecuted. If you really want to help with community relations, join a community group and be a voice to ease tensions - not go out and advocate the creation of new tensions.

You are using 'the last 3 years' as an excuse, but what does it have to do with this situation? Do these people involved have a history together or are you making generalizations?

I don't know the details of this situation, but a beating is a beating and should be dealt with.
