  • The police said that the man, Courtney Charles, 60, of 823 St. John’s Place in Crown Heights, was shot in the head about 4 p.m. on Friday. He was found in the front hallway of the building and was pronounced dead at Kings County Hospital Center, the police said.

Residents of the building said Mr. Charles had recently moved from a single room in the basement to a larger apartment on the third floor because two of his children were to move in with him. They said they believed he had recently obtained custody of the children. A neighbor said that Mr. Charles had two small children and at least one older child.

Residents said they did not want to give their names because the killer had not been caught.

  • A 64-year-old Brooklyn man who had just been awarded custody of his two young children was shot to death in his apartment building Friday night, police and witnesses said.

Courtney Charles took a bullet in the head as he entered the building on St. Johns Place in Crown Heights about 4:40 p.m., they said. His body was found in a first-floor hallway.

Police do not believe he was robbed.

"They came in behind him, and they shot him," said his girlfriend, who gave only her first name, Tasha.

Charles, whom Tasha described as "a street hustler" and a Jamaican immigrant, was dead on arrival at Kings County Hospital. He had a 1-year-old son and a 6-year-old daughter from a previous relationship.

"He didn't have papers in this country," Tasha said. "He worked hard to feed his children."

    No one was immediately arrested.

  • What a shame, thanks for the links
  • I believe there may have been a homicide at the same address last year. KWAC, sound familiar?
  • I don't know if it was the same address, but it was the basement of something MIGHTY close for sure.
  • EEK - I live a few doors down. I was out of town all weekend so I missed this completely and didn't even know until I just came across this discussion.

    How sad.
