Lost cat posters - 10th st btw 5th and 6th
Last week there were lost cat posters on the trees on 10th st btw 5th and 6th ave. I didn't notice them on other streets.
I remember glancing at the pictures but not really having a good look. At the end of last week a cat that looked like the cat I remembered from the poster showed up in my backyard. It's not one of the normal neighborhood cats that I've seen before. I'm pretty sure it's the cat from the poster.
The cat was very hungry, and I gave it some food when I went to get the poster from the tree. But the poster was now gone. I don't know if someone from the neighborhood took it down, or if the owner had found the cat and the new cat in my yard was just a coincidence.
The cat slipped away that night, but has now come back to my front yard.
So now I'm wondering if anyone knows of a lost cat in the neighborhood? It's black and white (with white on its face and belly) and is wearing a collar but no tag! I can't take it in (my cat goes crazy whenever it comes by). This cat is unlike any other cat in the neighborhood - it actually comes up to my windows and tries to come in through my doors. It obviously belongs to someone, but I think it's lost!

Maybe put up found cat posters. I'd also check at the local vets to see if they have posters up there that didn't get taken down by someone else on the street.
-
Oh, and check the pet food stores for posters too.

What color is the collar? There is a black and white cat with a red collar that I see on 11th Street all the time. It often comes into our yard and jumps on the back window because it is curious of our own cat. I assume it lives on 11th Street, and I saw a bowl of food or water left out for it in one of the front gateways.
I also remember posters for a missing black and white cat on 6th Avenue/10th Street a few weeks back (it looked like a different cat than the one from my yard) but they are also gone. -

Ohh... that's so sweet - coming up to the windows.... I think if you can take the cat in and put signs up where you previously saw them, it might be good. Maybe there are signs in the vet on 5th avenue and 8th Street -- park slope veterinary care? (it's possible the cat has a home in your nabe... but... ?)
Thanks for helping!

The cat has a red collar, it's probably the same cat you're seeing, Troy. Makes me feel a lot better to know it's not homeless and has rather just discovered our yard!
-
I've seen the black and white cat with the red collar in my backyard on 12th st. lately. He's not one of the usual ones I see.
-
just saw same cat on 11 bet 5 and 6th ave. tried to get a hold of it bit it wouldn't come all the way over.
-
I fed a cat on 5th Ave and 22nd St last night. It was white and grey and very hungry. It wouldn't let me touch it, but looked like it wanted to come into my apartment when I opened the door.

Subject: Saw the same black/white cat with red collar today
I live on 10th street b/t 6th and 7th avenue on the 9th street side. The same cat comes to my window a few times a week. I assumed it was owned by someone on my block but when I saw him this morning I got concerned and thought I'd check this site.
When I've seen him in the past, he looked healthy and well fed but this morning he looked so thin and his collar is getting too big for him. It broke my heart and was hoping that someone was missing this cat and I could get him back to his owner. -
what if you put signs up asking "is this your cat?" and describe the cat. maybe it IS lost and still has its collar. someone here was feeding him I believe?
Or at least then you could determine whose cat he or she is for sure.
thanks for checking in here about this! -
I've moved out of the area... but when I saw him last (5/23), I noticed a patch of fur on the top of his tail was missing. I hadn't noticed this before, so I'm not sure if it's new or not.
I really hope this cat finds its home soon! -
Oh my God I noticed the tail too! I saw him Monday night on 11th Street and it was almost midnight. I always assumed he belonged to someone on the block (we have a parade of cats that go through our yard and they all seem to belong to someone) but after reading all of this I am having serious doubts. I never let my cat outside unsupervised so I have no idea how these things work - do outdoor cats have their own entrances so they can let themselves in and out at any hour, or do they have to be let in and out? Either way that seemed way too late for a kitty to be out on the street, even though the weather was warm.
He always runs off when I try to get near him but perhaps I can lure him with food..... -
I can't imagine he's going inside regularly - his fur looked matted and dry. I am a cat owner too and he just doesn't look well cared for even if he does belong to someone.
I think I'll give him some food and snap a few pics while he's eating so I can put up some flyers...he really seems to have gone downhill so quickly. Poor thing. -
thank you all for noticing and paying attention!
(I can't believe how many of you live in the same block area!!)
thank you!
(and thank you smitty for helping 22nd street cat out!) -
Has anyone seen the black and white cat recently? Last week I put up some posters with pictures asking if anyone had lost the cat, and the next day I got a call from someone claiming to be the owner. Saturday night I saw the cat again and managed to coax it halfway through the door with food, but I couldn't get in touch with the owner and the cat, while very friendly, freaked out whenever I tried to close the door behind it (also my own cat was freaking out from behind the bedroom door), so after some time I let it go on its way again. Now I haven't seen it since! I'm not sure what to do and I feel I made things worse.
Here is one of the pics I took, though I'm not sure I am linking it correctly.

ohhh... the person who called said the cat was lost?
I know how you feel -- but you were trying to help. Hopefully someone else has spotted the cat...?
I dont' know where to post this but in my neighborhood someone has a 13 year old blind cat whose elderly guardian had to go into a nursing home.
13 is not that old for a cat now a days ... they live to 18 or 21. The cat is going to be euthanized on Thursday unless a home is found. Ideas?
Thank you. -
Hi, I saw the cat Monday night in my backyard. I fed him and he stayed in my yard for awhile. I haven't seen him since. What would be the best thing to do if he comes around again?

Cat trap? Slope Street Cats would have one you can borrow.

Oh great! Glad to know I didn't scare it out of the neighborhood. The person who called me runs an auto repair place in the area - the cat apparently lived there and went in and out, and then one day just never came back (He said it was a she and that he was positive it was the same cat). If it's okay with you maybe I can PM you my number and his just in case? (I don't want to post his contact information without his permission.)
And Cat that is so sad about your neighbor and her cat - I will ask around today for sure. -
Sure that would be great.
-
hi troy,
not to add a new wrinkle into the whole thing but ... do you think the cat is happier where 'she' is now? Hmmm. It sounds like a lot of people are looking out for her. (I guess I wonder about that string of auto shops but I don't know where this one is. nice that that the guy called...)
thanks re: older cat and neighbor. trying to put lots of feelers out. I have 3 cats and I think they would pick on this poor cat at least initially. I just don't know if i could take that on but I do think the cat should be saved.
thanks much.

I was thinking the same thing Cat - not sure how much better off the poor cat is at the auto repair shop especially since there are people looking out for and feeding her...I guess we'll see what happens. I'm happy to feed her whenever she comes in my yard.

I admit I have been thinking about the subject and I just don't know. I don't think it's uncommon though - my father has had a variety of garage/maintenance-type jobs throughout his life and at all of them there were cats and/or dogs that lived on the premises and that were fed by the workers, mostly strays that wandered in (Last week somebody abandoned an older kitten in a box on the premises and my Dad was happy to report that one of his co-workers took it home). I probably should have asked more questions to clarify the situation though. If the cat is his though I think he has a right to claim it, especially since I put up posters about it. I wonder where it goes on rainy days like this....
