Free sake at Sushi Tatsu — Brooklynian

Free sake at Sushi Tatsu

Is Sushi Tatsu worth it for the free sake? Some days, I vote yes. Others, I say no. It all depends on whether we can get a table at Geido, really.

    Hells no.

    Hells yes!

Tatsu has pretty good sushi. Admittedly, not great, but pretty good for the price. The service is always good because the place is NEVER crowded. Plus, they've got a great wood/fakewood interior, providing a warm, quiet ambiance. Geido is so noisy it's like eating sushi in a high school gymnasium during a basketball game--it would be cool if they let you play HORSE while waiting for a table there. But guess what: they don't.

Did I mention they have FREE sake? Tatsu is a great starting point for a weekend night out for 2 reasons:

    1. Free sake, so you get a little buzz on
    2. Sushi doesn't leave you too full to keep drinking at the bar

Tatsu. Love it. Tell me where I'm wrong!

I'll give you that Tatsu is quiet, but I think the sushi is crappy and the service is terrible. When there are only two tables filled in a restaurant it shouldn't take several minutes to flag down a waitress. My rankings:

    Taro
    Geido
    Gen
    Tatsu

I wish they delivered it. I'm not big on sushi but their tofu appetizers are good. should I hang out there drinking free sake and eating tofu?
  • Is it sushi only or do they have chicken or salmon teriyaki and other goodies?

They've got a whole range of stuff in there. I'm not the biggest sushi fan, but I love their oyaku don.
  • Well shoot, I'm all about free liquor. Let's go!
  • Are we talking all you can drink free sake or a glass of low end crap with your meal? Big difference in my book.

I think as long as you're dining, they'll keep bringing it if you ask for more. I've had 2 of those ceramic caraffes with my meal. Thought about getting a 3rd once but decided against it because sake doesn't always sit well when I drink lots of it.

Since it's free, I'm guessing it's low-end sake. But hey, it's hot, it's free, and the expensive stuff tastes like crap anyway, right?
  • I know someone who got a piece of whitefish there that had a worm in it. Granted, this is not totally their fault, but still I've definitely stayed away from the place since hearing about it. The one time I ordered take-out from there it wasn't bad, but not good enough to make me want to go back (especially after hearing about the worm incident). Geido is definitely better, and they have a nice selection of non-sushi items. Taro is the best sushi in the area hands down.

    totally unrelated message:
uh. I don't know how to say this, Carnivore, my friend, my pal, the guy who beat me at air hockey while I killed the rest of my competition: your avatar, since I got on this site, has made me think the phrase "penis cozy" more times than I feel comfortable relating. I think you need to know this.

    hilarious!

for the record, no relation to above (i hope), i've had nothing but very good sushi at tatsu. and the sake, while not oenophile-quality, is certainly warm.
