great sports/joint doctor?

edited November -1 in Park Slope
specifically I'm having foot and ankle troubles and I want to sort it out before I go overboard with summer activities. I want a doctor who well-versed in working with (over) active people, not someone who is more experienced with general falling, etc. injuries.

Feel free to share about docs you don't recommned as well as those you want to rave about.

Thanks!

(I asked a similar question months back but the thread seems to have disappeared.)

  • Dr Answorth Allen @ HSS
  • When I screwed up my knee a few years ago I went to this guy:

    Dr. Charles DeMarco
    (718) 369-0003
    University Orthopedics of NY, PLLC
    808 Eighth Avenue
    Brooklyn, NY 11215

I liked him. He gave me a recommended timeline for getting back into my activities, but noted that if I had something really important to come back for, we could discuss an accelerated schedule.

I went with his recommended timeline; there was no pressing reason for me to push it. But I liked that he gave me the option of at least looking into it, particularly considering that the "now little lady, why would you want to go off and hurt yourself again?" school of thought is still pretty prevalent in this day and age, at least going from what I've heard from some friends' stories with their orthopedists. I went back to him when I had some shoulder issues last year.
  • Hmmm...Demarco is covered by my insurance but only has appointments here one day a week and is booked for a while.

Any other suggestions (here or Manhattan)?

Any more opinions on Meislin, mentioned in the old thread below?

  • Try Dr. Ramon Vallerino on 8th Avenue...he's a rehab doctor.

  • I recommend looking into Active Release Techniques (ART). It did wonders on my ankle (could barely put weight on it to running in the park almost immediately after treatment), and I have a few athlete friends/co-workers (tri-athletes, cyclists, distance runners) who have also benefitted from ART. I found Dr. Donna Sands on 5th Ave. in Park Slope through their website, and I found a lot of docs in Manhattan that do it as well. She was great, I'd highly recommend her.
