(if you've missed the excitement: patterson has directed all state agencies to recognize legal gay marriages from other states & countries (MA, CA, Spain, etc.) as legal marriages in NY. this is well-supported by NY law -- previous cases have all found in favor of the married couples. the directive does not change the law of new york state in any way. it just means that each agency doesn't have to be individually sued in order to be in compliance with existing state law.)
