Things I Did Because it is Too Hot to Go Outside — Brooklynian

Things I Did Because it is Too Hot to Go Outside

(yes, I'm bored)

- watched "Recount" on HBO (pretty good, but pissed me off all over again)
- watched "Saturday Night and Sunday Morning" (eh)
- organized my medicine drawer
- organized my electronics drawer, including putting like cables together in plastic bags with labels (who knew I had so many USB cables?!)
- started reading "What is the What" by Dave Eggars (so far, so good)
- filed my bills
- watched a lot of "Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares" on the Beeb (love him)

although I did a lot of organizing, my house might even look worse than when I started.

  • I forgot one:

Read CL for men who are into being slaves, for the sole purpose of having one come over and letting me order them to clean my apartment until it's spotless. No sex. I'm too chicken to actually do it, but it crosses my mind sometimes
  • I actually went outside in this hot ass weather.

I just got back at 7pm.

I took my husbands niece to Mount Prospect Park and to the museum to watch the water go up and down.

We got rained on on our way back home.

Tomorrow is supposed to be 96 degrees!!!!!

I will be going out but maybe after 7pm. It might cool down by then.I hope.
  • Might I also add that, in the time since I last posted (in the Time Warner suck it! thread) , I installed 3 more air conditioners here to make a grand total of 5 kickin' at full pace right now, for reasons that Em26 describes.

    Might get 2 more tomorrow.

    :rendeer:
  • Still haven't installed our air conditioners. Got three fans going, though.
  • Jeez, Jeffrey! How many windows do you have? I have 2 ACs - front cooling the living room/dining room and back one cooling the office and bedroom. I leave the kitchen, hallway and bathroom uncooled...unless I am having company and need to get it cooled down
  • 29 windows. :D/
  • 3-story house with windows on 3 sides.
  • wow....big house.....big electric bill a'comin :-)
  • No. I keep hamsters in treadmills.

Okay, not really. The trick is to make sure shades are down on windows to keep heat out and cool in, keep everything open and air conditioners on lower floors on at a minimum and let the 3rd floor air conditioner battle the remaining rising heat.

That allows for things to remain relatively cool and keeps electrical bill down compared to all of them going fast and furious.

Just so happens we left for the day without keeping any on, so I had to crank it up this evening when we returned (whilst outside with kids pretending to be a keg).
  • smart.

I am watching my first instant Netflix. A movie called "I like killing flies" about Shopsins restaurant (used to be in W. Village, now in Essex Market on LES)
  • Ah yes, the place with the crazy menu (layout-wise).

I am about to examine what manner of mind-numbing crud is on the tube this fine evening.

So here's to hoping for plenty of that.
  • that's the place. Cool documentary too.
  • Ok listen bitches. Those things........metal thingys....window guards? The ones they put in windows so that the little people don't fall out.....I need to put an a/c in the bedroom. Could I do that? Or am I supposed to have the super take it out ? We have an a/c in the living room , but my sister in law and her two kids sleep in the bedroom and it gets freakin hot up in that mofo! I walked in there this afternoon and I stepped back like "damn bitch you're fucked". My husband tells them to feel free to come sit in the living room when you and the kids wake up....at 11am!!!!!! I don't sleep till 7 or 8am....I looked at him like dude I gotta hear the 2 year olds crying everyday and that is what wakes me up btw and now you gonna tell them to come in early as hell while I'm still sleeping?? He says I'm being selfish cuz its too hot in the room for them....Oooh no I can't be having that shit!! My favorite part of the day is when the demon goes to sleep. She is screaming and crying as I am typing OMG ](*,) Anyway , I need to get them an a/c in that fuckin room of doom. Is that window guard thing easy to take off?? It looks old and the screws look all rusty. If I don't get them an a/c in there than I am getting the fuck outta here. They are due to leave in 3 months , but wow I can't take that little girls constant crying! If the only room they have to keep cool is where I am , then I won't be able to relax. She is 2 years old and she cries for every little thing. Its annoying. She is cute when she wants , but 90% of the time she is giving me a god damn headache. She gets ice cream for crying .....ICE CREAM!! That is what her mama gives her to shut her up. She gets whatever she is crying for than still whines and then mama takes her into the kitchen and says "what does my baby want? How about ice cream , do you want ice cream?" WTF??????????????? I tell her not to give in to the child , but she never listens. The kid even hits her! Slaps her mom in the face when ever she is mad at her and she lets her! She even tells her to come and hit me whenever she is mad at me and I tell her "no no little girl! auntie will break your hands off and throw them in the garbage" then she gets mad and continues to cry.OOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooh.

Ahhh , sorry about my rant. window guard. I need it OUT!!!! Help.
  • Good grief. I have no idea what the situation is with your building, but I'd ask the super what you're supposed to do.

And no, the toddler shouldn't be hitting her mom or you or anyone and she shouldn't be getting ice cream to shut her up, but you knew that.

    Best of luck...
  • watch:

    doctor who
    farscape
  • The window guards come right out with those screws, just as quick and easy as as you suspected.

And I would think that having an ac unit in there would deter from any little ones accidentally falling through the window (lol), so it's not like window protection or child safety is being lost.

I'm not a landlord or anything, but if I were I would expect any tenants to be able to put in an ac unit or two, if there are none already provided. Does the lease mention any pre-approval or steps for this?

The problem with asking the landlord is that they might say no. (hah)

Still, perhaps they might want to be kept in the loop anyway.

As always, best to make sure there's no damage done, and touch up or clean up any scuff marks or screw holes. Basically, return to original appearance when finished with the unit (or the place).

Let's ask armchair...hey armchair, would you prefer tenants let you know if they are putting in a window ac unit?
  • Jeez, that's a sucky situation, Em. Let us know what happens

How is it outside? Do I dare? I have to go to Time Warner (see other thread)
  • I heard it was going to feel like 100 degrees out there. So I went to work.

    Bastards!

don't forget ceiling fans. keep that cool air moving without using that air conditioner's little engine!
  • I just opened my front window a crack, kept the shades down and put on the cieling fan for a bit. Went outside and took a quick walk. Gonna take the kitties in back for a few, go to TW and then get back into the igloo!
  • Okay.

Bro in law came to save the day! I called and left him a message at like 4am and he came this afternoon with an a/c and put it in the window. I saw that he had the window guard still in the window. He didn't take it out .I think he may have pushed it up or something. I don't know how cuz it didn't look like it could do that.I'm gonna ask him later cuz I have another window with a guard and so we had to put our a/c in the window where the fire escape is......I think that might not be a good idea.I'm gonna see if he can fix it for me so I can move the a/c to the correct window.

    I'm so happy!!!!!! :bounce:

And now I shall go do laundry......

    .......after 7 after 7.
  • Glad to hear things are improving, Em.

In my cleaning madness I have lost my cordless phone. I keep trying to call it and to use the homing pager, but nothing. One more reason why I should have had those CL sex slaves clean instead of me!
  • Seriously....if you were my phone, where would you be? I'm getting scared that I might have tossed it out with some of the garbage/recycling!

I even looked in the fridge/freezer, under the bed, etc.

    halp!

Check the pockets of everything you wore today and yesterday.
  • Ok, will do...btw, this is big cordless phone...not cell.
I remember playing around with it when my cable box blew out, because the base was plugged in to the same electric strip and I was plugging and unplugging stuff to figure out the cause.

    Ay yi yi.

Maybe I don't need to talk to anybody :-)
  • also just looked outside in garden and in laundry basket. Plus I took apart the couch cushions to see if the couch "ate" it. Fuck.
  • Flexi- did you find your phone? Where was it?

Things usually appear when you stop looking for them.
