Delivery truck hit my car!
I was walking to the grocery store the other day and noticed that a Williams Sonoma delivery truck was parked very, very close to my car on Carroll St. When I walked over I discovered that the truck had actually hit my car, dented the bumper and pushed my car up onto the sidewalk (no easy feat since we have an SUV). I looked for the driver but couldn't find him. When I returned with my camera the truck was gone.
Any thoughts on what I should do?

Did you get the license plate or truck number? Even if you didn't, you should be able to track him through a call to the company. You'll need to call the police and file a report.
Edit: This is assuming that you are looking to make them pay for the damage. -

damn. Call williams sonoma in the city and see if anyone got a delivery? I'd do that then try the website to see if someone maybe ordered online. Since you don't have plate numbers I don't know if you can call the cops...

Definitely call Williams-Sonoma, even if you didn't get the info. And make a report to the precinct. Even with a witness, it is very tough. It's not as though they let CSI loose on this kind of thing.
In the late 90's, Time Movers took my mirror off and scraped up the side of my car. I had a witness willing to sign an affidavit, a police report, and a fire in my belly, but I ended up with nothing because I couldn't take time off from work to appear or harass them. All I got was a letter saying that they had no record of the incident and to have my attorney contact theirs.
edit: Williams-Sonoma is probably a little more concerned about its reputation than Time Movers.
Good luck! -

Same thing happened to me a few years back. My neighbor saw it happening and took down the license plate number. I called the cops and they told me that there is nothing they can do because NY is a "no fault" state. In other words.....I can't sue or anything!!!

Did you call the police and report it? Even if you don't have a license number how many deliveries did Williams Sanoma make to the neighborhood? That would be hit and run.
What do you think of calli ng the insurance company and letting them deal with it? -

That's terrible.
There are hidden cameras all over this neighborhood. Contact the police and see if they know of any cameras that might have filmed the incident.
Good luck. -

A few months back my parked was hit by a US Postal truck. Did several hundred dollars of damage. A resident on the block witnessed it and was willing to go on record (unfortunately she didn't get the license of the truck). I called the police and they didn't seem to care at all. They came to file a report 2 hours after calling them and said there was nothing that could be done - even with the wittness. Also tried calling various numbers at the USPS - also led nowhere. I finally gave up.
Surprisngly, the manger of the 9th St post office was the nicest and most accomodating out of everyone I dealt with. Of course, this though was "out of his jurisdiction". -

Also: Try submitting the story to www.consumerist.com. They always have some good suggestions for contacting/pressuring upper management on a wide array of issues, and the site is pretty popular so any company reasonably concerned with their rep won't be thrilled to have the story up there.

In my experience, when you report something to the Police, nothing will be done about it 99% of the time. In fact, they may even try to talk you out of reporting it. It doesn't mean that a report shouldn't be filed! In this case, I would probably file it anyway for insurance purposes... -

NYC is the first place I've found where the police consistently and constantly try to talk me out of filing a report on anything. I agree that you should definitely file it though. -

Thanks for your advice. I called Williams Sonoma and, of course, my babies started screaming their heads off so I hung up. To be totally honest, I don't know if I have the energy to pursue this right now. The damage isn't that bad. I think it will be like pulling teeth to get NYPD to come look at a dented bumper (even I think it's kind of ridiculous). I'd love to rake the Williams Sonoma driver over the coals for driving away from the scene though.

On the flip side, from their POV, you can't prove that it was their driver. Even if you had a license plate number. Even if you had a witness (how do they know that the "witness" isn't a friend).
I'm afraid you're S.O.L. -
