Does anyone know if there's any other anti-crime patrol/neighborhood watch in Crown Heights other than the Chassidism?

oldbrooklynite, that's how it was in most neighborhoods until a certain time - I remember. . . . . (although not so much the 60's but the 70's).

My response was to your statement that Crown Heights was always a high crime area and it was not.It was a lower middle class to middle class neighborhood where children behaved and felt safe.It is unfortunate that many children growing up today are not taught to be responsible for their actions.Rock throwing is dangerous.Someone could lose an eye.

oldbrooklynite, I agree with you 100% - there's a serious problem with parenting (or the lack of it) and yes, rock throwing can be very dangerous!I guess to my memory, which goes back to the 70's, Crown Heights had become (or was becoming) a high crime area and very unsafe. Prior to that I heard it was really beautiful. P.S. - If my mom - or any of my friends' moms - would have caught us throwing rocks - THEY would have posted our pics on the internet if the technology was available

alafairnadia, I'm not looking for sarcasm. Does that mean that there is no other group that has gotten together trying to improve things? When I lived in Midwood (years ago) we had the Midwood Civic Action Council which may or may not be still in existance but they were terrific at the time. I'd really like to know. Thanks!

Subject: Crown heights
I moved away in 1964 and the neighborhood had started to change but yes it was quite beautiful. In those days the museum was free the gardens was free.We had the parks, the zoo, the swing park, the library, close to downtown Brooklyn where the stores were abundant and wonderful. You cannot even blame it on poverty. Many parents aren't bringing up their children properly. -

Anyway, I don't think it would go over well if I had a site and started posting pictures of Jewish people in Crown Heights and writing unconfirmed blogs about their criminal behavior. That would be wrong, the same way I feel posting these kids pictures is wrong. -

My friend. What it comes down to the rights of children. Black or Jewish.
What it comes down to is this; none of you give two hoots about the Jewish boys who got hurt, all you are worried about is the "poor black kids" whos pics went up on a some website.
If any of you have any better solutions on how to deal with a situation like this (and don't tell to talk to them or their parents since that had already been proven unsuccessful time and again) then be constructive and add in your two cents. otherwise why don't you all aim your baseless hate elsewhere.
If we are allowed to post the pictures of our children in such a negative light, what does that say about us? Can you see the ramifications of this? Then every child who is accused of something is branded, his mug shot on display for the world to see. A child. What message does this send to all of the youth?
How do you deal with a situation like that. Become a part of the community. across the parkway it is two worlds with in one A and B. Become friends with your neighbors. Talk to them. Realize all of us are on the same rock.
The first step is to accept that there is a problem and we all are part of it. The next step is to accept responsability... you know the routine.
I keep telling all that read my words. It hasn't hit the fan yet. It's summer, past time to start growing food in your yard and stocking up on food. First the prices will go through the roof, then the rationing. It's way past time we settle our differences and leave this petty stuff alone and start concentrating on the BIG picture.
That 2000 years has been up...

I find it disgusting that pictures of these children are published on
Surprisingly, they actually posted it. However, they edited it a bit in the process...
this blog. They are minors!I find it wonderful that pictures of these children are published on
CH Shmira is a joke. They are a detriment to the Jewish community, and serve to create further problems. Their history of assault and continued shielding and hiding of members sought by the NYPD outweighs and overshadows the good that they have done. I'm not averse to a Jewish patrol, but this one has serious problems and needs to be scrapped in order to move forward.
this blog. They are minors, but that does not mean they should be immune
to crime!! -
I'm still waiting - Is there any other group trying to make a difference that has organized a neighborhood anti-crime patrol in Crown Heights? Anybody??

I already mentioned and linked an article discussing Shomrim.
Besides that, I don't think that given the state in recent years of the CH Shmira that the, "Hey, they are better than nothing," argument holds water. As I stated, I think they are doing more damage than good to the community. Which isn't to say that such an organization couldn't do a lot of good. I believe there have been integrated Jewish and black patrols over the years, but I am not aware of any currently functioning. -
Thanks for the answer daver.

Yah, dead serious. I agree that it is funny as all hell, but in a kind of bad way. Not really surprising though, I suppose. -
4 Accused of Hate Crime
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: June 28, 2008
Four teenagers have been arrested on hate crime charges for throwing rocks at a school bus full of Jewish toddlers in a Brooklyn neighborhood with a volatile racial history, the police said on Friday.
The police said that three girls and one boy yelled epithets as they broke windows on the bus in Crown Heights last month. The children in the bus were not hurt. The teenagers arrested are black; each is 14.
The case is part of a string of events that have recently stirred tensions among black and Jewish residents in Crown Heights. Others episodes have included an assault on a black college student and an attack on an Orthodox Jewish teenager.
In 1991, clashes erupted in Crown Heights after a Jewish driver hit and killed a 7-year-old black boy. In the ensuing chaos, a 29-year-old Hasidic scholar was fatally stabbed. -

Dude didn't even get a memorial ramp.
But c'mon. I grew up in Brooklyn. When I used to take the schoolbus to elementary school, other kids would throw rocks at the bus at least once every few weeks. And my bus was about 90% Black.
I have trouble believing this is a hate crime. It just seems like kids being idiots (AKA kids being kids). It definitely doesn't warrant invoking Yankel Rosenbaum. -
