Finding an apartment in Park Slope
I am moving to NYC to start a PhD program at NYU in September and am trying to find a small apt. near prospect park. I have a 12 year-old yellow lab so I want to be near the park. I will have a part-time job as a nurse, and will be getting a stipend from NYU...
Is it possible to find a place for around $1200 near the park ?? Any advice, suggestions, tips would be greatly appreciated. Finding an apartment in NYC seems a little daunting. Thanks.

For $1200? Not so much. You'll need to reach out to the areas around the Park a bit.

It depends on what you mean by "near." But yeah, in Park Slope near the park? $1,200 is not likely to cut it, sorry. A good start is poking around Craigslist, but be wary of spotting the scams. It is usually pretty easy once you get the hang of it.

I just finished shopping for studio/1br an apartment in park slope and managed to get a place for 1500 including utilities. I have not seen anything within 150 a month, and nothing anywhere close to that in PS proper and not south slope. I think it was a realy good deal- I don't see finding anything for 1200.

Thanks for the replys. I can actually go up to 1500 so there might be hope. I am also considering Prospect Heights and the east side of the park things seem a little cheaper over there.
-
well you could always go kensington too its cheaper than ps or ph.

You might be able to find a studio in north slope for $1500...but it won't be easy. Carmen, where in pk slope? sounds like you lucked out big time!

it's on 7th s and 5th ave, and I did get lucky! it's pretty tiny, about 350 sq feet, but its newly renovated and has a dishwasher(!) and everything. no laundry in building or anything but with utilities included I couldn't pass it up. Especially with no brokers fee! -
Carmen - great deal. you don't see much of these apartments available anymore. I remember visiting a friends real estate office in park slope back in 1998. He had a young woman in the office looking for a studio and he informed her that she would be lucky to find anything under $900. She was almost in tears as she informed him that the most she can afford is $750 per month. He recommended area's outside park slope and she started to cry.

I'm trying to figure out how to make a comment about someone crying because they can't afford to live in Park Slope without being, er, mean.
Giving up. -

Yeah I thought it was a good deal- I went in to the management company yesterday (who are, incidentally, not very pleasant) and found out the building is actually rent controlled so that's also good news. -
Carmen - don't move out!
-
Oh, that's really great!! I wish my apartment is rent controlled too.
