    GETTING FREE JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION
    * JUNE 20, 2008 (Saturday), NOON – 7PM *
    BROOKLYN, NY

    This year, the Slave Theater (a cultural landmark) in Brooklyn, NY is hosting it's SECOND 'Link Up and Get Free' Juneteenth
    Celebration. This FREE event will feature some of Brooklyn's finest performing artist, local fashion designers, vendors and food that reflect the spirit of Juneteenth.

    The purpose of the Getting Free Juneteenth celebration is to primarily focus on building up a supportive network of community members, raise community awareness, network, artist exchange, and raise awareness about the Slave Theater. The Slave Theater is now in probate court since the passing of the late Judge John Phillips. We want to do it big this year. This will be a day we commit to each other the needed support as family, friends and co-workers. It is a day we build coalitions that enhance African American economics.
    With your artistic and community support, the Slave Theater will never be forgotten. We cannot do this alone. Everyone in the Bed-Stuy community and surrounding areas to join us in a day of celebrating our freedom from slavery.

    Slave Theater 1215 fulton Street Brooklyn, NY 11216 Noon – 7Pm For more information on this event and the history of the slave
    theater, log onto www.myspace.com/savetheslavetheater

    June 20, 2008 - UPROSE Healthcare Eduction Project & Red Hook Rise - The Baobab - IN COMMEMORATION OF JUNE 19, 1865. Community gathering celebrating our African Diaspora. Join our circle in commemorating one of the most under-celebrated historical events of United States History - the overdelayed emancipation of the slaves of Galveston Texas. UPROSE, The Healthcare Education Project, Generation H, and Red Hook Rise are joining to commemorate JUNETEENTH by hosting a night of education, culture and celebration featuring a screening of "Unnatural Causes: Is Inequality Making Us Sick?" and the award winning dance performance of BOMBA YO! JUNETEENTH - June 19, 1865 - was the day that General Gordon Granger rode into Galveston, Texas and issued General Order #3 that freed the last 250,000 slaves whose bondage, due to the minimal Union presence in the region, had been essentially unaffected by Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation of January 1, 1863. June 19th which was quickly shortened to "Juneteenth" among celebrants has become the African-American addendum to our national Independence Day. Celebrate with us our diversity and our heritage. Please join us for free food, screening, presentation and discussion on health care and the related issues that arise from inequalities, disenfranchisement, poverty, and other social dynamics. Directions to UPROSE: "R" train to 25th Street Come for education, libations, and liberation and invite others to this event! We look forward to seeing you there!
