Never been to Crown Heights but thinking about moving there — Brooklynian

Never been to Crown Heights but thinking about moving there

Hello,

My girlfriend and I (both 27) are trying to find a place to live in between our two workplaces, Midtown Manhattan and Far Rockaway Queens. Crown Heights seems to be located right in between these two points. Safety is our number one concern with Brooklyn since we've never been there. Are the areas around the 4 and 5 trains safe? I honestly no nothing about the area, so any information would be really helpful.

  • As usual, the answer is: it depends. If you read past postings on this board, you'll get a better idea of the area's safety. Most areas on Eastern Parkway are relatively safe. The area around the Franklin stop has changed quite a bit in the past 10 years, meaning that it's safer, IMO. The areas around Brooklyn and Kingston Avenues (Kingston Avenue stop on the #3) are pretty nice, as well. Classon Avenue has come a long way, too. The best thing to do is to spend time walking around the areas and then see how you feel. In many areas, it will be a "block-to-block" thing.
  • I would stay west of franklin avenue. If you've never been in Crown Heights you would stick out like a sore thumb. My building is pretty cool.. on classon btwn prospect and st marks.
  • Cool in the literal sense, no?
  • hahaha i should say its often cold
