Won't you be my neighbor? — Brooklynian

Won't you be my neighbor?

Subject: Won't you be my neighbor?

I'm currently living with my sister in Bushwick, but will likely be getting an apartment September 1st with a friend or two. Anyone love their neighborhood/apt/neighbors/landlord/rent so much that they want to recommend locations?

We're students- if it is two of us, we're looking for a 2BR as cheap as possible ($1600max h/hw included) and if it's 3 ppl, we can go to $1,800 max (h/hw inc.). I don't think anyone wants to flex a LR into a BR.

Doesn't have to be some "gut reno luxury doorman gentrified splendor" complete with tall no whip half caf skim latte just for signing a lease. Even if we wanted that ridiculous frill, we couldn't afford it.

It would be sweet if it were close to a train and eats/stores, not in need of many repairs, safe, friendly landlord and not ruled by the iron fists of brokers and strict management companies with their list of requirements beginning with credit check and ending with slaughter...I'm sure we can pay rent but have no (or crappy) credit and will rely on a guarantor. Ah and pet friendly- roomie's got a cat.

I have friends in PH, Sunset Park and BedStuy close to CH/FG- all seem happy. The slope and burg are out of the price range. Any info/advice at all would be great! Craigslist can tell you where to go and for how much- but it's not enough-I'd love to hear from the locals instead...and I got robbed last time I lived in an apt I found off Craigslist. Subsequently, and unrelated, my car window was broken in Bushwick- Trying to forget about it-it happens to the best of us, but I need a break.

It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood.

  • kensington is your best bet for cheap and relatively close on commute to manhattan and safe area. (not that much amenities) maybe got like 2 thai places.

bensonhurst( where i'm living with parents to save money). has tons of restaurants and stores etc... but very far away from manhattan. safe super cheap rents. but far away.
  • I second Kensington.
  • Sunset Park would also be a good option.
  • Kensington- Thai? Two? I think I could handle that.

I'm hoping I can do some fine Brooklyn convincing. She is away for the summer, so I won't see her until August- but I'm afraid she will like queens better. I'll live anywhere nice/safe/affordable- but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
  • if you have to do queens do astoria still cheap and got some places to eat :).
