Another bagel thread? Yes, to impart shocking news...
I got bagels this Sunday at the new place on 6th St & 5th Av, Brooklyn Bakery.
Only... they weren't bagels.
Oh, I don't mean they weren't good bagels. I mean they weren't bagels at all.
They were bread, plain and simple. Bread, in a bagel-shaped roll, with a flaky, dry crust and an interior of ... bread. And the coatings (in this case poppy seeds) pretty much ALL fell off in the bag. Because, honestly, bread crust doesn't really take toppings well.
They were not boiled. They were not bagel-y. They made no attempt to actually BE bagels, but there they were, looking for all the world like bagels, being sold as bagels.
And if you've ever put cream cheese and lox on what you thought was a toasted bagel and then bitten into a crusty, yeasty, fluffy, hole-filled piece of bread, you'll know that sinking feeling where surprise meets confusion and melds into pissed-offness.
Consider yourselves warned.

I have to agree. It seems that they might be a good breakfast option (the egg dishes I saw when I was waiting for my bagel order looked very good)and the coffee was not bad, but I was expecting a bagel place. It is not a bagel place. They are also very weak on the appetizers - no white fish, egg or tuna salad. The eternal search for a good bagel place in Park Slope continues.....

I feel you on the - that is not a bagel thing.
Your sum up of it was spot on priceless.
I have to say that OP- made me giggle.
Thank you- I really needed that too. -
Same kind of BS goes on at the newish "Hot Bagels" place on 5th and 14th. Just round bread with bits of food stuck on them. The place is always slammed, and it kills me.
