Pizza in the Slope

Forgot L&B... definitely worth the ride!~
Also Rocco's.. out of the hood but very Brooklyn.. -
Rocco's on 18th & 65th?
-
yes
-
I didn't know they made pizza. I thought they're strictly calamari and breakfast.
-
I second Peppino's on 5th. Yum.
And caution you to stay away from the place that calls itself Two Boots. It's not the same as Two Boots in Manhattan and the difference could make a strong pizza-loving man cry. -
What’s the deal with Peppino’s? That space use to be Aniello’s Pizza for so long, and they said it was just having renovations. But now it’s this new place that doesn’t even look like a Pizzeria, it’s looks like an Italian restaurant aimed for yuppies.

I don't get the Pino's bashing here. We recently tried Pino's for the first time after living nearby for over a year and we loved it. My boyfriend used to eat pizza only occasionally, and now he suggests it every week or so from there. Honestly, I think Pino's has great pizza. So do my neighbors. Also like Joe's on 7th, but Pino's is better.
-
If you love Pino’s now, there’s no word for how much you’d love it if you could go back in time to the 1980’s.

grandma pizza? what's that?

It's a variation on a Sicilian pizza topped with chopped tomatoes and garlic and brushed with olive oil so the thin crust cooks up crispy. The chopped tomatoes are often supplemented with sauce.
La Villa's, cooked in a wood fired oven, is described as follows:
Focaccia di Nonna (D.O.C.*) “Grandma’s Pizza” is made with Homemade
Mozzarella, Crushed San Marzano Tomatoes, Basil, with a touch of Fresh Garlic and Tuscan Olive Oil.
Truly delicious! -
I never saw or heard of a “Grandma’s Pizza” until just a few years ago when I saw one for the first time at Pipitone’s Pizza on DeKalb ave in Fort Greene. But there they called it an “upside down Sicilian Pizza.” Whatever you call them, they’re delicious.

crispiest crust i'd ever had on a slice in NYC was at Oscar's. great sauce and moz on their resh moz slice too. came and went way too quickly. i miss it.
someone mentioned what are BK's best pizzas. i'm afraid to admit this, but i've never had DiFara's. i hope to change that this summer. of the classics mentioned, the only one that really is consistently memorable to me is L&B. best square slice you will ever have in your life.
Totonno's can be great, but has become very inconsistent. when they're good, the pizza still rivals the best New Haven spots, but you can also get served a very average pie. -

While not in PS I still think Sams on Court St has the best pizza. They don't sell slices though. -

It's the second location. The original is in Bay Ridge. They have decent pies and good sandwiches, too. Honestly, I think it's too cheap to appeal much to yuppies. -
IMO the best "pizza parlor"non-restaurant pizza you can get in the area right now is the Grandma Pie from Joes on 7th. As for restaurants with Pizza...pepperoncino or franny's(even though it's technically not PS but close enough) are good. Sotto Voce has a pretty good pie as well.

When did you have L&B? I ask because the general consensus of myslef and the people I know who have been going there for years is that the quality of their pizza significantly went downhill in the past few years...maybe it is worth another taste.
You sound like a pizza lover, you should get to DiFaras, every pizza lover should get there at least once and Dom is not getting any younger. *sign of the cross* I've eaten at all of the other top pizza places in NYC and IMO while at times he can be incosistent (a lot more lately unfortunately); when Dom is on his game his pies have no equal. -
I don’t think anyone loves Pizza as much as me. But I think Di Fara’s is way overrated. It’s a unique experience to go in there and watch how Dominic DeMarco makes his Pizza. But once you actually eat it, the taste is not that good.
And I would agree the quality of L&B has gone down some in recent years. But it’s still better than average. -

I had L&B last summer. I've only been in NYC since 2001, so I can't speak for too far in the past. Then again, seven years sometimes means you were practically born here.

I do think most of the classics have suffered some sort of drop-off. My favorite all-time pizza, Frank Pepe's in New Haven, is always referred to as a shell of its former self. That shell, though, beats the pants off of any other pizza I can anywhere else. A white clam pizza there is a religious experience.
I've got to get to DiFara's. It's just embarassing that I haven't. -
About DiFara's - it's a major commitment - like falling in love, or buying a home, or deciding to have a child. You have to commit with your whole heart, soul and head. You have to know that this is the culinary equivalent of making a haj to Mecca. There's no turning back, no second guessing, and no critical review. You decide to go and you go and no matter when you go it will be crowded and there will be true believers there before you. You will watch Dom make one pie order at a time and you will be mesmerized at the love and care and skill and fresh ingredients that go into it. You will be child-like in your anticipation of the coming of your pie. And, if the planets are aligned, and the gods of even heating are present in the building you will get a perfectly charred pie, crispy crust and perfect temperature center and it will be the best pie you have ever eaten. You will not ever think anything differently. Because you made the ultimate commitment to this pie with your heart, your soul, your head and your love Of Dom and the myth and mythology that surrounds him.

Must have Brother's Pesto or White Pizza.
Grandma's Pizza, why bother. I don't see what a big deal it is, from any place. -

I'm assuming he means that there is such a constant new influx of people into Brooklyn, that being her 7 years means you have been here longer then a lot of other people and that makes it like you were preactically born here. -
