Book Recycling?

I am trying to get rid of some clutter in my house and that means getting rid of some old books.

I think some of them I can donate to the local CH library, but others are not up to their standards (have underlining, are not in the best shape, are old and out of date) and I want to do something with them besides the trash bin.

Anyone know what I can do with them? Can I put them out with the regular recycling? Are there organizations that take books with underlining? Any suggestions would be helpful, thanks.

I regularly donate my books to the Housing Works shop on Montague in downtown Brooklyn--it's an easy trip on the B52 bus. You can also take them to the Salvation Army on Irving (?) in Clinton Hill.

Great, thanks for the tip! It is so hard to find a place that takes books with underlining... I hardly think they are ruined with a few marks in them.

I leave books out on the stoop (when it's not going to rain) for informal freecycling
and love love love Housing Works

there's also books for prisons programs "Books Through Bars" now operating out of the NYC AIDS Housing Network on 4th Ave

I have thought about leaving them out front, but if no one takes them then I'm not sure what to do with them. I live at the top of a 4th floor walk up and am 6 months pregnant so I want to avoid carrying them up again if no one takes them... Does anyone know how the city feels about recycling books? How should they be packaged? Just tie them together like magazines?
