A Rooster Crows in Brooklyn — Brooklynian

A Rooster Crows in Brooklyn

So, this morning at 7:30 I'm walking towards the subway at 4th and 25th. At 24th and 5th there's a gas station. I just walk onto the gas stations parking lot when " cock a doodle doo!" is screeched RIGHT BEHIND ME! Of course I jump in the air. I turn around and..., there's a big rooster standing there. Other people were walking by like nothing happened. Another day in Brooklyn.

  • Where did he come from and where did he go?

I'm worried that he'll get hit by a vehicle.
  • That's a very valid concern, raw. I've picked up a couple of roosters in Brooklyn over the years - sometimes they escape from cock fighting rings; sometimes they escape from being sacrificed in bizarro rituals and sometimes they just get away from someone who had them as a pet. He probably needs help if there's anyone in that area who could check it out??
  • I think there is a slaughterhouse somewhere around there. Although a rooster might not come from there.

A friend on mine in the mid-50's has a rooster living in the backyard attached to her building's yard. It is very unpleasant since they keep windows open in the heat and it starts crowing at 4:30 AM until about 7 AM.
  • Ah, there is nothing more annoying than being woken up by a rooster in Brooklyn!
  • Mmmm, chicken...

    that's what IM sayin.
  • There's several Hallal meet markets in the area. The closest I think is 21st btwn 3rd & 4th Aves. We had a guinea hen sighting last fall...same fate as the rooster I'll beg to guess.
  • We saw a gaggle of a few roosters crossing the street down thataway awhile ago.

    Run free little birds!

That's right, couldn't remember if it was 21st or 20th. There's more than one I think actually. There was chickens in the backyard of an apartment I was checking out once in Bushwick last year. The realtor had no idea who's they were or why they were there. They kept starring at me through the glass, kinda made me uncomfortable.
  • ever been to Gerritsen Beach? LOTS of people keep chickens out there. it's like Brooklyn's own trailer park.
  • The Rooster lives at the gas station/auto shop on 25th & 5th. I see it on my way to work in the morning.
  • see this is the "scene" I have been looking for!
    sweet
