Anyone use Optimum Online Airport Express?
I was wondering if anyone in Prospect Heights uses Optimum Online wirelessly? I get a very weak signal, using my new Airpot Express with exisitng Optimum Online cable modem. I am wondering if it's a signal problem with the modem (even though Cablevision tell me it's fine and to ask Apple, who say to ask Cablevision...)
Does anyone use Verizon DSL or other DSL/cable mdem service in this area that works well?
Thanks,
Rebecca

i use verizon dsl and i dont like it. cable is faster and better. I'm waiting for my contract to expire.

I used to use Verizon DSL and found it slower than dial up. I am now using Opimum Online for wireless connection (through my laptop), and direct connection with my desktop and Playstation game. I do notice that with the router the connection is a lot faster.
Good luck -

I go wireless with a router and at best I get around 55% even in the next room which is more than a little ridiculous. But, the connection itself is fast and great. -

We use Verizon DSL and we're very satisfied with it. The speed is about the same as where I work and they have a T1 line (I think). We stream internet radio constantly and my wife works off her laptop while I work on the MAC and we have no problems.
Good luck

Time Warner cable offers connection speeds of 100 Mbps, plus you can get unlimited long distance calls via VOIP phones. It is expensive, and getting a cable guy to come out to your apt is probably the most frustrating process on earth, but the service after that is good and I haven't had any problems with my connection, etc. I use a Linksys router that gives me wireless connection speeds of 54 Mbps.

Funny you mention this because I recently bought an Airport Extreme for my IBook and noticed that the speed drops off after using it for about 10-15 minutes. I have earthlink DSL, and spoke to them, they did a time test and it seems the problem is with the Airport. I spoke with Apple and it seems that if the Airport and/or the computer is near a cable TV box or a cordless phone it can cause your signal to become weak. They reccomend moving from that area (that defeats the purpose, I bought it so I can lay on the couch, watch tv, talk on the phone, and surf the net at the same time) or change the reception channel (I think the default is channel 11, channel 1 and 2 work the best for me) and if all fails unplug the airport and reconnect. Hope this helps.

I use there whole package, cable (which is mediocre at best), internet access (which is really fast), and telephone which I hardly ever use.
We are thinking of getting wireless some day.... -
I have Optimum Online and use it wirelessly in my studio with all the bars showing for signal strength. All of my electrical devices are near each other (cuz hey, it's a studio) and don't seem to create any interference. Belkin router, Apple PowerBook, and a Netgear wireless adapter for TiVo.

I have Optimum Online and an Airport Express. Some days are better than others. I get three bars (on the wireless indicator in the top status bar) on bad days, but usually get all five. It's never so slow that I start cursing, but it could be far better. They advertised about a month ago that speed would be doubling soon. That's bs so far.
I should mention that I'm a telecommuter and a gamer, who does just about everything that requires bandwidth. If they offered Fiber to the Home (FTTH) here, I'd get it.
If your AE is still under warranty, I'd exchange it; can't hurt. -
tip for optimum users with speed issues: change out the metal gear. no clue what the thingys are called, but the splitter that cablevision gives you is total garbage. I was always having problems with my tv or my internet and I finally went to radio shack and bought one of their gold splitters ($10) - solved everything. for the record -- I have a PC hooked up via ethernet cable to an airport extreme routed through a linksys non-wireless router (don't ask - I'm too dumb to figure out how to undo the linksys firewall and nothing works if I don't leave it plugged in) as well as a ibook and dell laptop that I use all over the apartment with no speed issues at all.

For what it's worth, I don't subscribe to cable TV, just the Optimum Internet service.

I'm a very bad tv owner/user. I watch: ny1, football, rugby (not that they show it on fox sports world anymore, especially since it's now fox soccer or some such crud), soccer, iron chef (omg, did you guys know they're doing an iron chef marathon this weekend?!), and law & order. sometimes, when I remember, I watch the daily show. I have no idea why I have over 1000 channels, including some I pay extra for, and that's all I watch. but yeah. that's it. work pays for the internet half is some part of my justification. -
I use Optimum Online with an Airport Express wireless router. Both my 12 inch powerbook and my old G3 500 powerbook get the full 5 bars in the room with the router. It goes down to 2 or 3 bars in the adjoining rooms.
