just read in time out today about a new store which opened called urban alchemist. There's a 1/4 page on it where is says:

You won't know where to look first at this eclectic five-woman design collective that juggles the artists' various aesthetics with impressive agility. Covetable objects like Depression-era glassware rescued from estate sales, decoupaged vintage tins, woven baskets and distinctive handmade jewelry are sure to charm stockpilers of the uncommon.

I acdtually went in this store the other day. I like the fact that it's a collective, but frankly, it seemed to be a thin selection of knick-knacks and the same old jewelry available at every flea market. I'm hoping the selection gets more varied and into the unique home stuff, personally, but it's a cool idea.

I had one of these stores at the beginning of the summer, when I moved from my old apt to my new one. I made 500 bucks in two days of selling junk on my stoop. I was shocked at how much people will pay for junk.

Hopefully these chicks will make more than 500 bucks every couple of days though, otherwise they're have to close so Bank of America can move in.

I think its quite an exquisite selection of artisan products/labor of love, just like the shop itself.
I welcome that entrepreneurship still has a chance to grow in Park Slope.
And until we all find full time work, it's a delightful place to step in take a break from the computer, talk to the cute and friendly owners and perhaps get offered a glass of wine while we learn about the artisans work.
Now, back to job hunting!

if you guys want cheap crap, go to target. if you want handmade art, the artists at urban alchemist are worth the price.
