new to the area, any advise for jogging paths in CH/FG? how is the running in fort greene park?

Anybody use the new york sports club in brooklyn heights or boerum hill? looks like a bit of a hike from CH, maybe a bike ride to start the morning..

any advice is appreciated

  • Fort Greene Park is fine for running, although the loop is rather small. There is a good variance in grades, so if you want to challenge yourself there are a few steep ones; good for getting your heart rate up. Altogether, though, I found FG Park gets rather boring after a short time. It is an 'off leash' dog park in it's entirety before 9AM, which isn't a problem, but if you don't like/are afraid of dogs that might be a factor as well. If Prospect Park is a reasonable distance I'd surely chose it for running.
With regard to gyms, there is a Crunch Gym on Fulton at St Felix and a really well-appointed Y on Bedford and Gates. I'd love to go to the NYSC in Boerum Hill (I'd get a corporate discount) but it's just too far to be convenient.

Hope that helps. Welcome to FG/CH!
  • thanks for the advise. maybe I will run to and around prospect park
  • Prospect's MUCH prettier IMO- also there's more of a canopy, so on hot days the path stays relatively cool. The loop itself is a deceptively short 3.3 (or so) miles- about half the length of Central Park's.
  • also the run/ride to Prospect Park is relatively short, about 1.2 miles.
  • I love running in Prospect Park, though now it's a little far for me. I've been going to Fort Greene Park, but yeah, it does get boring. It does have an urban all-terrain appeal... : )
  • hopefully the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway project picks up some steam

  • FG Park is really nice, but yeah it's very small, so you'll get bored unless you don't mind doing endless loops. The Bed Stuy Y is fantastic, though. I love it, it's got a good number of machines, plus an indoor pool and track. And cheap! They have discounts with a few different insurance providers - I only pay $32/month. Check it out.
  • thanks!
  • The NYSC on Remsen Street is very nice. It's on 3 levels, lots of cardio machines and good sized area for free weights. They also have a good mix of classes. It's a quick ride on the bus/train. the NYSC in Cobble Hill is very small and cramped so I try to avoid it.
